  • This Vintage Interior Design Style Home Is Rooted In Art And Memory | Redbeam studio

Nestled in the bustling city of Mumbai, this vintage interior design style residence serves as a serene oasis for a couple who share a deep passion for art, literature, and nostalgia. Having lived in the house for many years, they have curated a stunning collection of artworks, paintings, and books that beautifully reflect their refined tastes. The renovation project was more than altering walls; it was about weaving the soul of a home.

The house, constructed with regular columns and beams, was brimming with history—a canvas that needed to respect their growing collection of thousands of books and a plethora of artworks from across the world. The design had to adapt to the collection, allowing the paintings to shine while maintaining the space’s integrity.

The Entryway: A Subtle Prelude to the Home’s Heart

The transformation begins at the entrance, where one is welcomed by an exquisitely designed brass lotus motif on the main door and subtle rattan detailing on the safety door. Inside, a wall adorned with paintings invites the users into an artistic world. A full-height storage unit takes center stage, seamlessly blending with a low-height seating bench designed to accommodate the family’s extensive shoe collection.

On the right is the servant’s room following the kitchen, with the guest room opposite it. A path leads into the living room with a sliding folding door for seclusion to the rooms inside. Throughout the house, gentle curves replace straight lines, with entrances flowing into rooms through curved transitions.

A Living Room for Art and Reflection

The living room comes as a calm, thoughtful canvas, divided into three parts—living, dining, and mandir. Each piece of furniture, from the sofas to bespoke centerpiece and the dining table, reflects the couple’s tastes. The furniture features exquisite details like soft fabric and molding on sofas and table legs. Woven rattan accents on the chair add to the textural richness.

The TV unit is a long horizontal piece highlighting jute, moldings, and teakwood columns, subtly echoing the artistic richness of the home. Moreover, a curated library nook houses a collection of books.

Niches are casually arranged on the sofa-side wall, softly flowing into the dining area, where nine well-aligned pockets carve out. Brass artefacts peek through these niches, creating a cultural rhythm. Additionally, these niches are bedecked with lights, exuding an ethereal beauty to the room.

A pocket was broken and extended to create a bespoke bar, with the crockery unit refurbished and large paintings hanging on the wall.

    Mandir: The Sacred Serenity

The living room seamlessly integrates into a place of worship, mirroring the owner’s spiritual life, with the balcony thoughtfully converted into a mandir. Teakwood columns stand elegantly on one side, while on the other side, a storage unit is cleverly hidden. An arch frames the area, creating a flow into the sacred space.

Inside, the mandir features a wooden stepped structure for offerings. Full-height curtains, both on the window and living room sides, provide privacy. The area is enriched by artwork, while a stunning Nandi-print seating elevates the spiritual ambiance.

A Reimagined Kitchen that Blends Style and Efficiency

The kitchen, once closed off with a door, was made into an open space. On one side of the entry, the wall’s depth, shaped by structural columns, presented an opportunity, a sliding shutter with full-height storage discreetly integrated.

The transformation also introduces a wooden-tiled flooring and a palette of teakwood brown, white, and grey. A balcony ahead houses the dishwasher, washing machine, and dryer. Furthermore, partition panels, crafted with jute, patterned glass, and teakwood molding, offer discretion.

    A Graceful Guest Haven

The guest room transforms into a serene, light-filled retreat. The original deep reddish-brown flooring gave way to white tiles adorned with traditional motifs, adding brightness. A teak-brown TV unit faces the bed, refurbished to preserve nostalgia.

The bed, with its teak-brown color, anchors the bottom of the wardrobe and the bathroom door with its hue. For the owner’s love of peacocks, the wardrobe panel features an elegant peacock motif wallpaper. Moreover, chairs and tables find new life as seating, making the space personal.

    A Cozy Den

The den, designed for both study and relaxation, blends modernity with vintage interior design style and touches. Clean-lined wardrobes set the stage while curved niches for display add fluidity. The TV unit features long horizontal storage filled with books and teakwood columns supporting the shelves, reflecting details from the living room.

While the wooden flooring divides the space, it extends into a cozy balcony. One side offers storage, while the other displays bookshelves.

    A Master Retreat

The master bedroom was envisioned as both a sanctuary and a library. Storage for books was carefully integrated with bookshelves lining the walls framed by arches. The bathroom door lies in the center of these bookshelves. An arch elevates it, creating a series of arches on the wall. Moreover, the wardrobe, clad with jute and glass, echoes the arches to maintain harmony.

The bedroom has a window on one side of the bed exhibiting asymmetry. However, it inspired a poetic solution: a mirror on the other side. The shape of the window mimics symmetry and extends with an arch above, similar in form to the wardrobe. When one enters the room, the differences between these elements remain unrecognizable.

The other window was extended to include a cozy nook for quiet tea moments, with storage on either side.

A Sanctuary of Culture and Spirituality

This home is a sanctuary where art, spirituality, and passion converge. The owner’s love for art is woven into every corner, with careful attention given to each painting’s presence within the space. It’s a house that blends modern aesthetics with traditional elements while also providing a backdrop for the family’s evolving collection of art and books.
