  • This Contemporary Indian House Redefines Small Spaces with Grace | Echo – Objects and Spaces

Nestled in the bustling suburb of the city, this 950 sq.ft. apartment, ‘Oris,’ is a contemporary Indian house reimagined into a warm and inviting two-bedroom home. The former third bedroom now serves as a versatile living and study space, defined by an intricately crafted wooden sliding-folding partition. A neutral, subdued palette forms the perfect canvas, with earthy vermillion tones adding depth and warmth to intimate corners like the dining area and the entrance to the private rooms. While the bedrooms exude a sense of calm and understated elegance, each bathroom bursts with a playful pop of color, bringing a touch of joy to the serene setting.

We worked with a restrained palette, focusing on a few materials and pushing them to their best potential. A neutral base anchors the home with dark warm-toned wood and deeper rust accents in the dining nook and the door that takes one to the two bedrooms. We’ve used textured plaster walls in the larger volumes to bring softness. while the flooring is seamless and subtle, allowing the spaces and elevations to stand out. The flooring throughout the house features a seamless neutral tone. To add definition, black granite inlays subtly highlight the entrance, mark the dining nook, and frame a defined portal to the study-cum-guest room.

Editor’s Note: “In Oris, spaces unfold as an act of balance through fluid, warm, and layered details. This home is an art of small living that feels expansive, thoughtful, and deeply connected to the people it holds. Muted palettes, rust-toned furnishings, and handcrafted elements create an intimate yet intentional living experience.” ~ Anusha Sridhar

    Entrance

The entrance door truly sets the tone for the entire house—an enchanting blend of contemporary stonework and exquisite teakwood and birchwood craftsmanship, coming together.

The safety door of the house. It sets the tone for everything that follows. It embodies the home’s essence: crafted with intent and layered with materials and meaning. Moreover, it reflects the coming together of different personalities and preferences, all held within a frame of thoughtful detail. It’s the first impression, and a lasting one.

    Living Room

The living room is a bit of a shape-shifter—an expanding and contracting space that changes in nature with how it’s used. At its heart is this exquisitely crafted sliding-folding partition door, tucked within a black veneer and granite entryway portal.

    contemporary indian house

It opens out into a secondary lounging space, allowing the living room to grow into a larger volume for gatherings and celebrations. And when the mood calls for something quieter—a study session or a bit of solitude—you can simply pull the partition shut. As a result, the space instantly becomes more intimate.

The carved wooden partition between the two living rooms. It acts as a quiet sculpture within the space. When closed, it transforms into a striking backdrop, especially with the swing in front of it and Oorja’s ethereal cloud light floating above. Together, they create a layered moment of stillness and beauty.

    Dining Room

The dining nook curves gently into the home like a little hug—framed by a deep rust wall and a granite inlay that adds a touch of drama. A round marble table sits at the center, surrounded by deep green chairs. Thus, perfect for quiet dinners or the kind of long, laughter-filled meals that linger.

    Kitchen

The kitchen stands as a gentle contrast- It leans into a European charm with moulded cabinet shutters, a rich mocha brown countertop and petite black handles that add just the right hint of detail.

    Master Bedroom

The master bedroom exudes grandeur and personality. A dresser mirror framed with pieces of marble catches the eye as one enters. A banana fibre paper wall lamp from Oorja illuminates the dressing space, casting a warm glow.

The seamless black console stands as functional art across from it. The wardrobes are detailed with self-patterned veneers and handcrafted teakwood handles. The bath is a combination of deep red and black, with gold fittings for a luxe, striking look.

    Daughter’s Bedroom

The daughter’s bedroom is simple, with contrasting veneers on the wardrobes, natural wooden handles, and a linear study table beneath a handcrafted suspended light—functional and clean with crisp details.

One of our favorite elements is the ceiling-suspended light above the study in the daughter’s room. It was conceptualized and handcrafted by Harsh using leftover site materials. Specifically, he repurposed scraps of fiberboard, pigmented concrete, putty, and layers of handmade paper. What began as fragments came together into something whole, turning waste into a one-of-a-kind piece that’s both functional and poetic.
