  • This Home Reveals How a Japanese Style House Embraces Simplicity | Dreamscape Architects

Shibui house, as by its name, is our interpretation of a Japanese concept, that in its core is a performance of simplicity—an approach that defines the essence of a Japanese-style house. This house is an attempt to achieve that simplicity with its rawness and delicacy in the space making.

Editor’s Note: “In Shibui house, the Japanese art of subtlety is transformed into modern everyday living. From partition grids to tinkling majeeras, every detail evokes a meditative rhythm while celebrating the sense of place. Moreover, it’s a dwelling where silence and simplicity speak, layered with soulful intentions.” ~ Anusha Sridhar

    Design Strategy

The project is refurbishing an old house, located in Ahmedabad. The project started by understanding the given space and reimagining it for specific clients. This also required altering some of the built, while of course maintaining its basic framework.

We altered and extended a few spaces in order to simplify the zoning and circulation. The floor area of old house was 340 sq. m, which we extended to 487 sq. m. This allowed us to open up the spaces – making them not only larger but more functional as well. Rezoning of the house helped in making it Vastu compliant.

    Rezoning of Spaces

The rezoning of space allowed us to introduce new furniture layout and especially revised inter-relation of spaces. There are various partitions that functionally divide but visually connect the spaces. These partitions are compositions of two simple elements – line and dot.

The one near temple space has majeera , a small Indian percussion instrument, which creates a pleasant tinkling sound while in movement. These partitions create beautiful grey zones, contrasting to the idea of compartmentalizing every space.

Hence, it gives a gradual sense of transition while one moves between spaces. Also making them feel larger and cozy at the same time. These little details is where the design flourishes.

Even the door handle is customized in order to give the sensorial experience of personalization to the clients; in a market that is otherwise prominently working on mass production basis. These details give the joy of personalizing the space as per context and function.

    Material and Colour Palette

Our material and colour palette is inspired by the concept of Shibui; then translated for the Indian context and hence there is a play between the two.

The lime-like finish again gives a grain of imperfection to it, along with soft edges. It is celebrated by various artworks and the warm light that falls on them. Wood remains as an element of continuity in otherwise dynamically changing space types.

For instance, the proportions of partition grids are inspired from Japanese visuals while the tone of wood is very much Indian. The dark wood is then accompanied by lighter tones in lime like finish – complementing each other and making a calm composition.

The work space on the upper floor follows a slightly different line of thought. It is designed in a darker palette to formalize the experience. From spatial compositions to curtain styles, every detail is very formal in nature.

It creates a stark difference between the formal work space and very informal and cozy living spaces. The house contains both, in their respective zones; in order to fully utilize the spaces.

Shibui House is an exercise of understanding Japanese concept and giving it justice in the Indian context. It certainly gives a global vibe in a contemporary world.
