This Indian Style House in Chennai Becomes a Retreat for Music and Soul | Crea Projects

On the sun-kissed coastline of Chennai, where the music of waves never ceases, stands a quiet 2,500 square-foot retreat—an Indian style house by the beach designed not just for living, but for listening. Aptly named Project Rhythm & Blues, the home belongs to celebrated playback singer Srinivas, whose life and art find resonance in every corner of this thoughtfully designed haven by Crea Projects.

Project Rhythm & Blues is the kind of home that holds its stories close and sings them softly. It is Srinivas’s sanctuary, yes—but also shaped by the quiet discernment of Sujatha, his wife, a homemaker with a deep appreciation for art, cinema, and music. While Srinivas tuned the soul of the space, Sujatha ensured it was equally rooted in everyday grace—thoughtfully planned storage, warm layered lighting, and an intuitive flow that made the apartment feel both open and intimate.

Together, they brought two rhythms into harmony—the lyrical and the lived. As the waves keep time and the light shifts with mood, this apartment becomes less of a structure, and more of a song—quiet, deep, and full of feeling. More than a residence, it is a lyrical ode to the sea—where architecture and music entwine in a slow, soulful rhythm.

A Home Composed in Stillness and Song

From the moment one steps into the apartment, there’s a palpable sense of calm—as if the home itself inhales and exhales with the ocean. An open-plan living space, flooded with natural light, draws the eye toward the horizon, where the sky brushes the sea. Large sliding glass doors frame views that change like ragas—sometimes quiet and grey, other times brilliant and blue.

“The apartment borrows cues from nature,” says Ar. Narayanan Kumar, Principal Architect of Crea Projects. “The vertical lines are reminiscent of the rhythmic waves that hit the shore. We’ve played with different hues of blue—like the ocean as it changes through the seasons. Even the textures—sand, pebbles, driftwood— make their way into the design, almost like background instruments in a musical score.”

Where Every Detail Holds a Note

Instead of grand gestures, the design speaks in whispers. The flooring is warm, tactile, and earthy— complementing the rawness of hand-textured walls that capture the light like wind on water. The furniture, minimal yet comforting, is arranged like a well-orchestrated ensemble—allowing for quiet conversations, impromptu jam sessions, or simply, solitude.

There’s an instinctive layering of space here—one that reflects the many roles of the inhabitant: musician, father, thinker. Each room holds space for both movement and pause.

The Music Room: An Intimate Stage

In the heart of the living room, a quiet nook has been crafted for an upright piano, where Srinivas often composes, hums, and jots down spontaneous riffs. It’s an unassuming corner—yet one that frequently fills the house with the gentle strains of melody, becoming both instrument and anchor to the home’s soul.

Of Terraces, Time, and Tide

Step onto the terrace, and the apartment’s rhythm softens into breeze and birdsong. Hardwood floors meet planted greens. The sea performs, unprompted. It’s a space for late-night melodies, morning meditations, or a shared drink as the sun dips into the Bay of Bengal.

A Poetic Collaboration

Project Rhythm & Blues is the kind of home that holds its stories close and sings them softly. It is Srinivas’s and Sujatha’s sanctuary, yes—but also a testament to how spaces can reflect not just who we are, but who we aspire to be when we’re most at ease. As the waves keep time and the light shifts with mood, this apartment becomes less of a structure. Instead, it transforms into a song—quiet, deep, and full of feeling.
