Imagine this for a design brief: Design an apartment for 3 generations. The family’s young kids have an endless love for the sea and the sky, grandparents’ sensibilities are deeply rooted in traditional Indian styles, and the young parents are all about modern minimalism. The home has to integrate these diverse styles through eclectic interior design while maintaining a harmonious feel. All this on a suboptimal, builder-provided floor plan.
When Khushbu Patel of KP Designs, a boutique design firm based in Bengaluru, decided to take on this project, she knew that it was going to be a fulfilling and challenging ride. And it did not disappoint!
Editor’s Note: “This Bengaluru home is a symphony of childhood dreams, ancestral roots, and modern grace. Effortlessly anchored in Indian heritage, the interiors are crafted with joy, style, and memory. With every turn and every corner, there’s a reminder that the most meaningful homes embrace every layer of who we are.” ~ Anusha Sridhar
The Eclectic Interior Design Brings Together Three Generations Under One Roof | KP Designs
As one enters from the main door, classic elegance and contemporary flair engage in a captivating dialogue. Soft, muted walls provide a canvas for bold design elements such as the gold and wood planters from fleck placed on a custom veneered tv console as well as the wall light from the white teak company or the Buddha painting.
Two modern armchairs finished in Italian Napa leather and houndstooth fabric paired with two minimalist marble-wooden coffee tables complement the understated sofa. An abstract monochromatic carpet with its bold lines and contrasting colors, introduces a touch of some unexpected drama. Visible from three room entrances, the Krishna idol, set against marble and tree foliage wallpaper, creates a striking visual impact with its patterned wooden ceiling.
“The client had a very specific set of requirements about the living room seating. It needed to be able to accommodate 10 people. Further, it was critical that a maximum of those 10 people get a good view of the outside. So, before finalizing the sofa style, we iterated over 8 layout options and finally chose a minimalist, angular sofa complemented with designer armchairs and pouffes to add a bit of play and pop” says Khushbu.
The angular sofa design cleverly utilizes a living room notch to maximize seating. Despite its size, the inward-facing layout creates a conversation friendly set-up. Draped in soft grey, it acts as a maintenance-free playmate for the young kids. White walls with 3 flushed doors create an expansive feel, accentuated by linear wall panels and dramatic lighting. An abstract art piece, a designer black wooden console, a layered wall rug (by Loops by LJ) and a Fiddle Leaf plant collectively form a perfect amount of ornamentation. Despite the notches in layout, the design maintains a sense of centrality through the clever placement of these various elements.
Adjacent to the living room is the dining area where a large dining table with a nero saint laurent marble top contrasts with fluted golden legs and metallic base. Pendant lights(from Fleck) above the table echo its metallic and black finish. A vibrant bar unit, adorned with a bold floral print, adds a striking counterpoint to the otherwise restrained palette.
As a result, this 800 sqft of living and dining area is transformed into a space of refined character, a place where tradition and modernity coexist seamlessly. It echoes stories of the past, yet welcomes the promise of new adventures.
Rust orange cabinetry sets a bold stage in this kitchen, contrasting playfully with crisp white upper cabinets and backsplash. Black accents, like the knobs and glass shutters, add a touch of sophistication. A whimsical patterned floor(tiles from FCML) adds just the right amount of playful energy. The C-shaped layout maximizes counter space and efficiency, while the breakfast bar seamlessly connects it to the dining area, promoting an open and inviting flow.
“The apartment originally had a small 10’x9’ kitchen – woefully small for the client’s large family. The utility area, unsurprisingly, was built with cheap materials, and full of small niches. Moreover, the walls restricted movement and light. So, we broke them down, subsumed the utility area into the kitchen, and finished it as its true extension. The result was a 20’x10’ kitchen with 38 ft of counter space” says Khushbu.
This relaxing master bedroom features a subtle wallpaper, white marble floors, and an upholstered bed with an L-shaped, gold-framed headboard. Sophistication is added through white fluted details (pelmet, bedside tables), a black-accented, curved false ceiling. Circular niches, like miniature galleries, display travel treasures, while an abstract white face artwork oversees the understated beauty.
The walk-in wardrobe, clad in grey linen with matte black accents, presents a striking contrast to the bedroom’s pristine white interiors, creating a dynamic yin and yang effect.
The children’s room is a lively haven of exploration. Teal accents all around reflect their love for the sea, and contrasts beautifully against the subtlety of white, pinewood and cane elements. The layout maximizes space, with furniture positioned along the walls to create an open playarea.
Shelves brimming with books, toys, and curios line the arched alcove in the catchy teal backdrop. A vibrant carpet from Jaipur Rugs, reminiscent of an abstract painter’s palette, provides a soft ground for the kids to play on.
The Parents’ room, bathed in soft blush tones, evokes a sense of calm. Arched niches, reminiscent of Indian Jharokhas, display vibrant wall-plates showcasing Kashmiri and Pichwai Indian art forms. Walnut-toned fluted ceiling pelmet creates a sense of continuity.
The teakwood bed, with its rich curves, embodies timeless elegance. Cane lamps and brass accents throughout – on doors, wardrobes, and the bed frame – add warmth and a touch of royalty. The console and wardrobes, both crafted from teak and adorned with rattan, seamlessly blend form with function.
The client fell in love with the Indian lilac white marble and envisioned it in their powder room. To complement the marble’s intricate pattern, we chose navy boat tiles. A cohesive look was achieved with matching blue wallpaper and Kohler fixtures. Finally, French gold accents—on the mirror, wall lights, and fittings—provided a touch of refined whimsy. The final design, while perhaps unconventional, beautifully reflected the client’s vision.
Embracing eclecticism, the team at KP Designs crafted a space that celebrates the unique personality of each family member while fostering a sense of unity. By carefully curating colors, textures, and styles, and deeply understanding the clients’ needs, they created a home that is a true reflection of the family.
