  • This Family Home in Bandra Is A Story of Modern Interior Design for Home | Joyeeta Design Studio

The house is approximately 1400 sq. ft. and is spread across three bedrooms and a study in a residential society called Rustomjee Seasons in Kalanagar, Bandra east, Mumbai. With a vision rooted in modern interior design for home, the space was envisioned for Lakshmi Iyer, Jankiram Karra, Son Abhinav and their beloved pet dog Coco. They are both senior professionals from the finance world, Lakshmi Iyer is the CEO of Kotak Mutual Fund and Janki is from the bond market. Their son Abhinav is pursuing his undergrad from University of Purdue and visits twice a year, hence his room has been kept minimal. The project has been completed in 6 months while they were living in the house.

Editor’s Note: This home is imagined as a warm cocoon for its dwellers. With a neutral color scheme, traditional textures, and patterns, this home reflects refined luxury in its design. Finished off with a harmonious blend of exposed bricks, wooden rafters, the home is a dialogue between past and present. ~Rajvi Dedakiya

    Living Room

The project is characterized by a serene combination of modern and traditional design principles. The living room‘s colour scheme is warm and earthy by using neutral tones and adding splashes of colour through paintings collected by the client over the years, featuring works by some of India’s celebrated artists. They introduced a variety of textures, patterns, and visual elements to create a tactile ambiance that feels both rustic and sophisticated. The contrast between exposed brick wall, wooden rafters and textured lime plaster wall with sophisticated light fittings highlights the contrast.

At the end, the house must satisfy the individual needs of the client, and yet retain the colourful and natural look that is both functional as well as beautiful. The family handpicked a few pieces of furniture from established brands such as Magnolia and Sarita Handa, while companies like Fusion Access and Dtale Objects crafted bespoke pieces to complement the home’s aesthetic. The living room’s black centre table is from Sarita Handa, and the live edge dining table serves as a work of art in the dining room, which is an organic form. it has a few cane chairs and a comfortable bench with a back upholstered in yellow floral Sabyasachi fabric against the brick wall.

    Dining Area

Majority of the artwork around the house belongs to some renowned Indian artists such as Sunil Das, Ramesh Gajrala, Srinivas Tingeerkar, Ohm Surya, Robin Mondal, Achuthan Kundalu,  Kandan and Meghna Patpatia. The painting above the dining table is by Ohm surya ,whose work is a commentary on socio -geographic transformations that define landscape.

The entrance of the house has a few swivel mirror panels finished in veneer. Moreover, these act as a screen as well as adds a beautiful touch to the entrance. The apartments in Rustomjee Seasons don’t have an entrance lobby or an indirect entry. Therefore, it was important to introduce a feature that acts like a screen as soon as you enter.

    Master Bedroom

The master bedroom is an absolute delight in its rustic, old-school setting. Moreover, the four-post black cane bed pairs beautifully with the heavily veneered moulded cane wardrobe sliding shutters. The bed sits against a lime plastered or lime stucco finish Limocoat wall. Additionally, a beautiful painting by renowned Indian painter Srinivas Tingeerkar adds an artistic touch to the space.

    Son’s Bedroom

The bedroom of Abhinav sports a colour palette of grey, blue, and ribbed oak. The wardrobes and TV credenza feature a ribbed veneer finish, kept simple to let the natural texture of the veneer stand out beautifully. The space is open, functional and inviting. The sofa bed is hand-crafted by a local supplier, and the top lift table is sourced from West Elm. The room is not occupied full-time by the son, who is studying away. Therefore, it also functions as a media room. A wood boutique called Wootique crafted the piano bench. Additionally, it is foldable for convenience at the entrance of the room. The piano bench has a mirror on top.

    Study

The study features a small working table, a TV credenza finished in veneer, and a 5-foot-long sofa couch. The clients primarily use this space for work meetings, and it also doubles as a media room. This is also Coco’s (pet) room.

    Guest Bedroom

The guest room serves a functional purpose for the clients’ parents when they visit. It features a king-size bed with side tables, a TV credenza, and spacious wardrobes. The walls display a selection of beautiful paintings, while two comfortable chairs complete the space.
