An unusual transformation—from a private residence to a luxury retail store—Qbik’s latest outlet in Hyderabad’s Banjara Hills is a dialogue between the city, its history and geology. Thoughtfully curated to every inch, by Akash and Poonam Mehta, the co-founders of AMPM Designs, this stunning 3000 sq.ft fashion store interior design brings together the raw, enduring beauty of Hyderabad’s ancient rock formations with the sleek sophistication of contemporary design. In doing so, it not only reflects on the store’s physical setting, but also reinterprets it into a visual vocabulary that aligns with the fashion brand’s identity.
Editor’s Note: “Inspired by Hyderabad’s ancient stones, Qbik boutique meets artistry through modern design. Light, nature, and bespoke craftsmanship create an immersive experience where history and design intertwine. Every garment in this space unfolds a new story and a new layer of craftmanship.” ~ Anusha Sridhar
This Unique Fashion Store Interior Design Echoes Hyderabad’s Ancient Rocks | AMPM Designs
“When I first arrived in Hyderabad, the city’s majestic rock formations and the residents’ appreciation for well-sculpted landscapes left a lasting impression. This inspired the creation of a conservatory within the store. Moreover, bringing in natural light and lush greenery to harmonize with the retail space.
The design philosophy was to make Qbik’s stunning fusion silhouettes and groom’s wear the focal point, while the store’s architecture and decor serve as a homage to Hyderabad’s unique charm.” said Poonam Mehta of AMPM Designs.
The store’s design integrates elements of Hyderabad’s rocky landscape into its very foundation. The micro-concrete floors merge fluidly into the walls. Moreover, these are textured to resemble stone facades but finished to a smooth touch. This creates an environment that feels both robust and inviting, reminiscent of the city’s caves and arches.
Originally a residential home, the building has been transformed with thoughtful design solutions. This was done by overcoming challenges like low ceilings and existing columns. Thus, creating a space that feels both open and intimate to the client.
Every corner of the store reflects Qbik’s dedication to detail. Additionally, the use of stretch ceilings hidden within display racks focuses attention on the clothing. Meanwhile, the ceiling-hung, fluid racks add a sense of movement and elegance.
Collaborations with designers like Nitush and Aroosh have resulted in bespoke furniture pieces that echo the store’s rock-inspired aesthetic. Metal-crushed leg poufs with fur tops and rock-replicating coffee table bases with glass tops are just a few examples of the thoughtful design of fusion.
Upholstered pieces in boucle fabrics maintain a tone-on-tone palette, to create a cohesive, luxurious atmosphere. The conservatory concept brings in natural light and greenery, creating a serene and inviting environment.
The store features unique design elements such as a black and white striped hand tufted carpet runner on the staircase. Additionally, it features custom-made Jaipur Rugs, and heritage wallpaper by Kalakaari Haath for the exclusive trial room. This space is adorned with carpeted flooring and mirrors on all sides, enhancing the shopping experience.
Modern sofa chairs and central costume light installation by Hatsu, adds to the space’s contemporary look, along with a striking rock table and pendant light by Nitush and Aroosh in the grooms’ salon. Fluid-shaped accessory, designed in-situ and a centerpiece costume light installation by Hatsu highlights Qbik’s commitment to the fusion of heritage and modernity.
This store is a testament to AMPM Designs’ ability to merge traditional and modern design elements to create a luxurious retail space. Overall, it draws inspiration from the city’s geological essence and its rich history. The studio has also crafted a retail space that not only embodies Qbik’s vision but also offers an authentic and unforgettable shopping experience to visitors.
In Akash and Poonam’s design the rocks are as much a part of the narrative, as are the furniture pieces, sculptural display racks, and QBIK’s signature clothing range. By this virtue, the store is in its truest sense an intersection of fashion, architecture, and geology.
