A small-sized elevator of a residential tower in Mumbai opens to a 5-foot-wide corridor adorned with charming old terrazzo flooring, studded with a diamond-shaped design. An antique jharokha, intricately detailed with parrots and flowers, warmly greets the visitors, reflecting the essence of Indian traditional interior design.
This 3BHK apartment is owned by a delightful South Indian family. When the client expressed their desire to transform this old apartment into a space that caters to today’s modern lifestyle while retaining a traditional soul, we knew our design had to be both sensitive and innovative, merging two distinct worlds. We named this project YUGAM—the merging of two yugas, heritage with modernity.
Indian Traditional Interior Designs Add Elegance with Antique Details | Deepti Tangri & Associates
The heartbeat of the project lies in the artifacts and collections of our globally traveled client, which we have consciously integrated in ways that seamlessly blend with the new designs.
The entrance lobby, with its majestic Chettinad pillars and brass collections, greets you with a warm, inviting energy. Beyond the archway, you enter a brightly lit living room with expansive windows that create a seamless visual connection between the indoors and outdoors.
The living room layout is designed to maximize openness and natural light. A wooden element runs throughout the living room, offering aesthetic simplicity that compliments the richness of the classic furniture. The sitar, cuckoo clock, brass artifacts, and antique wooden panel are décor elements that harmonize with the heirloom restored furniture, which takes center stage.
The temple of the home is nestled in a cozy part of the central corridor. The wooden shutter with fluted glass and peacock handles opens into a dimly lit temple area. The walls are adorned with embossed gold lotus motifs, adding a touch of opulence to the modest space.
The home’s visual language embraces simplicity, showcases rich materials, and integrates heritage elements to create a tranquil atmosphere. The bedrooms carry the same design sensibilities, becoming sanctuaries of relaxation.
The master bedroom exudes rich Indian character. The design honors our client’s desire to incorporate rich wooden textures, reminiscent of their ancestral heritage. The existing old wooden bed was refurbished with a new headboard and side tables.
A classic dressing mirror on a pivot, placed beside a wardrobe designed in wicker and wood, compliments the ethnic charm of the room. The study table extending into a sit-out area was a natural solution for a client who seeks comfort in every corner.
The delicately crafted wooden frame, which will house God Balaji, is a tribute to India’s diverse craftsmanship. The sprinkle of gold in curtains, lights, and décor complements the brown wood and muted white walls.
The master bedroom is an elegant blend of contemporary design and cultural heritage, reflecting the family’s values and love for warmth and simplicity.
The guest bedroom exudes a serene air of calmness. Minimal furniture in soft beiges, light wood tones, and whites sets a calming tone of refined simplicity. The textile prints in the bed and curtains bring a comforting charm.
The room takes full advantage of the south-facing window, allowing sunlight to create a delightful dance of shadows throughout the day. The bay window in every room is an ideal spot for celebrating mindful pauses amidst the maximum city.
The room belonging to 2 young girls is a reflection of their vibrant personalities. To achieve this, we carefully used colors in a texturally rich room. The earthy hues of wall texture, wicker, wallpaper, and fabric, set in a soothing color palette, capture the essence of modern elegance.
The most cherished part of the room is the window seating, inviting one to sit in the comfort of daylight, gazing into the green surroundings while reading a book. The study table, with floating storage and a curvaceous shape, adds a touch of casual elegance.
A quiet color palette is a constant throughout the home, with archival brass artifacts and wood furniture taking center stage. Yugam is an abode that beautifully captures the essence of a modern family deeply rooted in tradition. Moreover, this project embodies our design philosophy—merging heritage with modernity to craft timeless spaces filled with soul and meaning.
