Classic design, native to any place or country, is a style that shall always retain its glory, sophistication, & grandeur. At the Earthen Habitat, with an attempt to curate an Indian classical home, we have amalgamated certain elements that draw its attention to the warmth of Indian design. While at the same time, this traditional Indian interior design introduces a dash of contemporary minimalism.
Editor’s Note: By the fusion of traditional elements, wooden textures, and a few vibrant tones, Tan Teal Studio fills the house with contemporary charm. From heritage-inspired flooring to charismatic vintage wooden furniture, every element revokes traditional Indian charm with a touch of modernity to the house. This Traditional Indian Interior Design Introduces a Dash of Contemporary Minimalism | Tan Teal Studio
Breaking the longevity of the entrance passage, a play of flooring pattern can be seen. Furthermore, the use of Indian Green marble along the border with heritage-inspired black and white tiles at length until the first door.
The hallway of The Earthen Habitat presents a blend of contemporary and traditional design elements. Above the door is an arched canvas is highlighted by a decorative floral wallpaper with a mix of blue, red, and yellow hues. Thus, creating a charming and inviting entry point. A small light fixture illuminates the floral design, adding warmth to the space.
A beautifully carved mirror on a monochromatic palette is set at the entrance wall, over a utility drawer & cabinet beside it. The ceiling runs in an arch throughout the length of the passage creating a sense of illuminated grandeur.
As one proceeds inside, the living room can be seen spreading on a horizontal canvas, with the seating area on one side & the dining area on the other. The whole space at large has been set in two key colors, a veneered teak wood representing the Indian Classic Style & beige. Moreover, it balances the deep tones of teak wood in a minimalistic manner.
The TV unit uses Indian Green Marble again, maintaining the uniformity of material and style. Above the veneered TV unit, a ceiling-high cabinet showcases several shapes & designs on its facade. Additionally, the cladding of natural terracotta tiles, finished in beige paint, brings about subtlety.
The seating area adorns a rust-colored sofa & two armchairs crafted in a brushed gold & wooden finish. The Indian-patterned cushions along the seating add a perfect charm, while several indoor plants add a touch of greenery and life to the space.
The dining area is situated near another full-length window of the room, covered with sheer, floor-length curtains that allow light to filter through while maintaining privacy.
This modern dining area is bathed in natural light, featuring a sleek and minimalistic design. The centerpiece is a rectangular dining table with a light-colored terrazzo surface, customized to match the colors of the room, which is stylishly complemented by a set of comfortable, upholstered chairs in a muted blue-grey color. Additionally, the table is adorned with a simple, decorative bowl filled with assorted fruits. Thus, adding a touch of color and freshness to the scene.
Behind the dining table, there is a built-in storage unit with a distinctive design. The storage unit features clean, white cabinet doors and an open shelving section with a unique arched opening. The shelves within the arch showcase various decorative items, including potted plants, ceramic vases, and books, which create an aesthetically pleasing focal point. The interior of the arched shelving features a floral wallpaper, adding a subtle yet charming contrast to the otherwise minimalist decor.
The other side of the dining table, leads towards the kitchen, who’s entrance stands contrasting to the cabinet flanked around it in veneered teak wood. The cabinet showcases a minimal design, serving as wall panelling. On the window side, the designer installs an elaborate inlaid marble slab in the Mandir, enriching the space with a sense of Indian architecture. A bi-fold door sandwiches a wallpaper featuring an Indian print.
The overall design of the room is elegant and functional, combining modern elements with cosy touches to create an inviting and stylish space.
The kitchen design minimizes excess, contrasting with the Indian tones of Teak wood to introduce a contemporary language.
At the entrance, the design reuses heritage tiles, while the dado tiles complement the mixed design language of the space.
The 1st Master Bedroom, along the entranceway passage, is occupied by the Parents. However, it displays a set of rust colour tones along with a green palette. The bed highlights itself in a seamlessly running green fabric, with a headboard featuring a patterned red and white fabric, contrasting the upholstery of the bed. Beige and cream-colored bedding dress the bed, tuning down the language of its bold design.
The room binds together in several Indian Geometric patterns, as seen in the headboard fabric, floor tiles along the window, wardrobe shutters, window seating fabric & room curtains. The side table features a ribbed profile in a wooden box. Leaving room for table top space, a full height mirror stands tall creating a sense of space and reflecting the room.
A low seating has been built-in along the length of the window, with a niche at its end. The upholsterer has upholstered the seat in a white & beige fabric, seamlessly enhancing its design.
Across the seating, the wardrobe shutter features a green & beige patterned texture, created with a customized wallpaper sandwiched in glass. Consequently, the room blends modern and comfortable elements, resulting in a relaxing and inviting atmosphere.
The bathroom of the room features a similar language of colours. The bathing area projects a terrazzo patterned grey tile while the basin area has green subway tiles with beige toned grouts matching the base colour of the bathroom.
The design utilizes and styles the space above the WC in an alternate pattern of closed and open spaces. Thus, ensuring that the open spaces match the green tiles of the bathroom.
The 2nd Master Bedroom is a combination of boldness in minimalism. An otherwise muted room has elements which set the language of the space.
Based in a terracotta colour, the geometric pattern on the tiles represents the traditional Indian Athangudi style, maintaining the Indian tones of the house at large. The bed features a boldly contrasting black & white sheet, complemented by a set of assorted cushions, creating a striking visual appeal.
The headboard & chest of drawers across each other, display a differently scaled ribbed pattern, in a muted self-textured beige tone.
The wardrobe showcases the same ribbed pattern in a subtly different warm grey tone, with real teak wood used to fabricate its handles and the hanging light beside the bed.
The bathroom features the same language of the room in a yet bold manner, with the use of ribbed terracotta coloured tiles & cabinet finished in the same colour. Additionally, the floor adorns a beautiful Athangudi-inspired pattern. Moreover, 2 niches with a black border define the bathing area, while the black border line seamlessly runs along the entire periphery of the bathroom.
The final bedroom of the house is the Guest Bedroom. The space utilizes its height effectively, with a full-height cabinet and mirror on either side of the bed. Moreover, it seamlessly runs in continuity with the wardrobe.
The wardrobe displays 2 bold rust coloured patches in an inverted arched shape. The bed back & side cabinet has vertical lines in a seamless format.
Patterned fabric in a geometric pattern upholsters the bed and window seating. Thus, creating a cohesive look throughout the room.
Summing up the entire space, the house embraces a homogeneous design that stays rooted in the Indian design style. Additionally, natural tones of terracotta and green flow consistently throughout. Inspired by traditional elements, all patterns and shapes create an atmosphere of extreme warmth and invitation. At the same time, the design maintains a subtlety and a monochromatic base palette, bringing harmony to this Earthen Habitat.
