This Commercial Design Narrates Diversity of Human Skin | Ark Architecture Studio

Skin Stories is a dermatology clinic at Hebbal, Bangalore, designed with the core concept of this commercial design narrating and celebrating the diversity and uniqueness of human skin. Inspired by the vast array of skin colors and textures, the clinic’s design embodies the beauty and complexity of the human epidermis.

Editor’s Note: “The Skin Stories clinic in Bangalore, designed by Ark Architecture Studio, celebrates human skin’s differences and distinctiveness. The design concept was inspired by the intricately rich textures and tones of the skin, encompassing walls, earthy palettes, and materials to create a harmonious and inviting space. Each detail has been cleverly thought out to accentuate natural beauty.” ~ Anusha Sridhar

This Commercial Design Narrates Diversity of Human Skin | Ark Architecture Studio

Design evolution

The main objective of the design was to represent the canvas of the human skin and thus all the contributing elements from the shape and structure of the walls to color palette and textures were meticulously chosen to reflect this idea.

The partition walls that divide the entire space into zones are curved and flowy, again evoking the natural contours of the human body. The planning was also a design derivative of the wrinkles and folds of the skin structure.

Reception Area

“The Epidermis” – a welcoming space with a warm, beige color scheme and mauve accents. Seating spaces with smooth, curved structure evokes the natural contours of the human body. Wall punctures were given on the walls that narrate the story of natural skin with textures and bumps. The designer carefully chose the color palette to resemble a harmonious blend of skin tones, ranging from the lightest ivory to the richest melanin. The walls, ceiling, and flooring feature shades of beige and ivory, while mauve shades on the seating furniture reflect the tones of lips on the human body.

The entire space divides into distinct zones, each reflecting a specific aspect of skin anatomy and physiology. Upon entry, visitors are welcomed into a vast reception area. Additionally, it features curved beige walls and mauve seating spaces for waiting patients.

Two access ways connect to the reception: one leads to a passageway that takes you to the rest of the treatment rooms, while the second leads directly to the doctor’s room.

These passageways interconnect, allowing the doctor to visit the treatment rooms directly without passing through the main reception area. In addition to the consultation room and treatment rooms, the design provides a store, a pantry area, and a toilet space, all accessible from the main curved passageway.

Treatment Rooms

“The Hypodermis” – sleek, modern spaces with a focus on functionality and hygiene. Thus, featuring neutral tones and smooth surfaces.

Consultation Room

“The Dermis” – intimate, calming spaces with soothing melanin shades, representing the skin’s underlying structures. Additionally, the designer elevated the consulting bed space, incorporating wooden flooring to enhance the design.

The team carefully chose all the materials and textures for this project, aligning them with the concept. The arched, cane-sandwiched doors represent the porosity of the skin barrier. A translucent partition wall with glass blocks was provided in the reception area, representing skin cells and also letting in sufficient light for the space. Micro-cement creates the flooring, giving off a raw and natural texture finish that reflects the skin’s textures. Additionally, soft and supple materials shape the seating and upholstery, mimicking the gentle, pliable nature of the skin.

Thus, Skin Stories is a skin clinic that embodies the beauty and diversity of human skin. We incorporated a thoughtful design narrative to create a unique and welcoming space that promotes skin health, wellness, and self-acceptance.
