  • 7 Woodworking Tips to Improve Your Efficiency

Nowadays, everyone opts to work smarter using shortcuts. Woodworking too can be done following this way.

But you need to be very careful while you are doing any woodwork as these are very delicate things and can get ruined easily. Even many professionals face problems with woodworking.

So, you should stay systematic and work efficiently in a simple but very productive way. Given below are seven easy yet effective tips to improve your efficiency while woodworking:

    1. Moisture Content of Your Wood

Be conscious about the moisture content of the wood you are using. If the moisture content is very low, then the end product may get cracked. On the other hand, if the moisture content is too high, then it will get distorted or shrinked.

According to many experts, the main problem in a woodworked product is due to the inaccurate moisture content of the wood used. So, it is always recommended to be well aware of the moisture content of each piece of wood to be used.

    1. Accurate Measurement Matters

It is recommended to use a drafting square to make the accurate measurements. It can mark the layouts very easily and in a faster way.

While there is a requirement of a 2-3 feet range square, a drafting square is believed to be far better than drywall square in terms of accuracy.

    1. Clean Workspace

It is very important to keep your workspace clean (whatever work it is, it may be kitchen work or office-work or woodworking).

Because a messy workspace may be responsible for hampering your efficiency. So, attaining desirable output at your shop is just as simple as cleaning up your comfy home corner.

You should not keep all the items outside always. Only, keep those items out in front of you which you need to use regularly. And, the rest of the items should be kept in a proper place arranged in ordered way so that you can get them easily whenever you need.

    1. Use Sharp Blades

It is better not to use dull tools like blades, scrapers, etc. as they fail to provide a clean cut or the sharp cut. Moreover, they end up giving a downy and an unprofessional look to the final product.

Also, never let your tool become too hot while you are using a grinder. In fact, it is recommended to dip it into cool water after few seconds of use. This will help to prevent the unwanted problems.

After the grinding is over, the next step is refining (or honing). In this step, a wet stone is used do fine woodworking.

The final step is to polish the final product. Tools with sharp blade make the final product look professional and smooth.

    1. No Drywall Screws

Instead of using a drywall screw while fastening two pieces of wood together, it is better if you use conventional wood screw as this will give you better results.

Also, the fragile steel shank of drywall screws is likely to get broken during the fitting procedure, especially if the wood used is hard. Getting out it from a finished item is very difficult and even if it is taken out, then the surface gets damaged.

On the other hand, wood screws are favored because they are made up of soft material and are not brittle at all.

    1. Avoid Glue Stains

Your wood may end up with glue stains very often while you are dripping glue along the joints.

To avoid this, at first clasp the pieces without glue. At the joint, put a tape and cut them with a sharp blade. Then take the two pieces separately, apply the glue and again clasp them together. This time the tape will be the victim and not the wood. Take out the tape prior to the glue gets dried.

    1. Story Stick

Make a story stick to avoid repetitive measurements and make accurate measurement.

Don’t get messed up. Keep these simple tips in your mind and follow them to improve your productivity in woodwork.
