As we celebrate World Architecture Day every year, there is a theme or emphasis underlined to make it a point of aim to be discussed. The International Union of Architects announces ‘Architecture for the Future Generation’ as the theme of the year for 2024. It encourages young minds/budding architects to learn and contribute towards designing green and sustainable cities. Such initiatives for World Architecture Day prepare young and bold minds to meet urban challenges, which is the need of the hour.

Before we unveil those architects, let’s understand the following:
Have always thought about the role of teachers in grooming today’s most celebrated architects. They sow positive seeds in students in the right direction. Shouldn’t they be the primary first to be celebrated on every World Architecture Day before discussing the growing design trends?
Today, with an increased number of design and architecture events, every host looks for an impactful speaker. After graduation, some architects dive into research and contribute to the existing stock of knowledge. Gradually, with experience and literature knowledge, they also transform into speakers to influence young minds. They observe and identify the right concerns and put them forward in front of the professionals. These small questions and talks create a positive change.
Students pursuing B.Arch. in design schools and universities always look for extra on the media. Some of them like to explore and create dialogue with professionals in the industry. In the last 5 years, few architects have identified this gap and developed a platform that bridges students and professionals. Some amazing speakers do masterclasses and empower them with additional resources. These platforms go beyond lectures and offer students beyond learning in schools.
Architectural learning is more inclined towards understanding the needs, assessing the context, exploring design options, and more. However, some students enjoy modeling using software and tools. Furthermore, some of them feel that there is a lack of advanced software learning. Identifying the above-mentioned gap, some graduate architects create educational platforms for mastering professionals with various software skills. These additional skills help them to master a tool that is almost equal to pursuing a master’s course.
We observe some of the architecture and interior projects are minimal with calmness and maximal with excitement. Ranging from elegant designs to intricate patterns, a project holds a certain value and evokes emotions. To appreciate and reach this kind of project and the architects who design it, architecture media houses offer elevation to them. Architectural journalism is one of the popular alternatives for architects who don’t want to practice and make buildings. Whether writers describing the designs or journalists raising provoking questions about the community, this medium is simple yet powerful. Writers play a key role in curating panel discussions for meaningful discussion. These positive impacts might change their way of designing or something.
Without realization, every architect searches for something; it is called research. However, the search with systematic procedures can be claimed as the scientific body of work (research). As a path leading to innovations, a lot of architects invest their time in search of new knowledge with patience. There are few architecture and urban research organizations to find new to the existing stock of information.
Some of the professors and graduate architects like to be associated with their favorite areas of interest. It could be bamboo construction, building simulation, 3D printing, etc. The architect cum workshop tutors play a significant role in upskilling the professionals to grow. Furthermore, a lot of practicing architects attend workshops to enhance their skills. Additionally, these workshops become an eye-opener to shift their career path.
Across the world and in India, we observe various design events and architecture festivals with the participation of star architects and designers. In the last 5 to 10 years, there have been several architects who created brands to host such events. The curated design festivals are outlined, designed, and executed by a team of architects. These festivals help with networking, hearing out panel discussions, participating in workshops, and enjoying the overall ambiance.
Do you agree that most of the architects and public spend significant time on social platforms? Some of the unnoticed historic structures, new innovative projects, smart product designs, and wonderful public spaces have reached viral reach. Some architects and influencers like storytelling and appreciate the efforts behind designs. Today, some of the influencers create a positive impact in not just storytelling but also enhancing the visibility of fascinating startups.
Can you believe it? These are a few of the reasons, and there are a lot more to mention as well. On World Architecture Day 2024, we urge the community to take time to acknowledge and appreciate the architects who make a positive impact beyond buildings. World Architecture Day also allows celebrating architects who practice and don’t practice yet contribute to the community.
