The Stack House is an interesting residence, designed in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu for a young entrepreneur and jeweler. He had a site that was very small in size. It was sandwiched between a multi-storey building and an empty site on the other side. Buildings across the street were mid level apartment buildings as well. The size of the plot was about 1200 sq.ft and we had to design a residence for him as a single user with additions for future family. With the site constraints, we decided to stack the programs of the space vertically. Hence, resulting in an interesting form and flow of spaces. The plan is stacked on top of each other, dividing and grouping the programs based on function and zoning of public to private.
The Stack House is an Interesting Residence | Vishwakarma Design Studio
The Stack House is a typology of residence that is unique to the Coimbatore residential landscape. Since we are generous and blessed with more landscape, the houses more often lean towards a horizontal planning and this posed an interesting challenge for us.
The design evolved into a 4 storey plan with a semi-basement garage that could house up to four cars. Additionally, we had tucked away all the services and amenities into the garage. The remaining floors were divided into public, semi-public and private zones, from ground floor to the second floor.
The ground floor houses the verandah, kitchen, living area, dining, pooja and a guest bedroom for visitors. The ground floor is an open layout, with a flow of spaces that merges into one another.
This floor, we layered the spaces as it welcomes the user into the space as they take in all the elements. This further, sets the tone for the residence.
At Vishwakarma, we altogether lean towards higher ceilings to establish a sense of spaciousness in our design. Moreover, this especially helps in a small site. The overall outcome, with an earthy, wooden palette and layered elements of hand painted doors, copper detailing and wooden panelling just completes the space.
The first floor has the other guest bedrooms and the home theatre and we continued the palette here.
Our favorite floor is the second floor, which houses the master suite and we designed the entire floor like a studio for the client.
This floor further aces with its spacious, open feel and design, blending modern and contemporary styles, with handmade wooden furniture, all designed and made in our studio and furniture platform, and rustic tiles, with an bathroom that has an oculus skylight, that brings a flood of sunlight that creates a marvel of textures and play.
We also included a terrace that serves a hosting space for the client for dinners and get togethers for his friends and family, with the background of the sky really sets a beautiful tone for the space.
Hence, the Stack House is one of our favorite residences and is a wonderful space to live in the heart of the city with the spaciousness and vastness imbibed into creating a modern and thoughtful home for our client.
