A Home that Identifies with the Indian Context and Cultural Identities | studio TAB

Editor’s Note: Studio TAB shows collaboration between modern designs with a touch of ethnicity in the spaces of this apartment. The infiltration of colors, texture, and patterns through linens does light up the space and portrays the residents’ love for their roots. ~ Nishal Sevak(Co-Editor)

A young family with their two kids who had spent the longest time in Singapore were relocating to Pune. The family wanted a home that identifies with the Indian context and cultural identities. Having spent their childhood in Pune, they wanted this home to have reminisces of the place. Yet, the home couldn’t be a stark contrast to the urban ways of life which their kids have grown up in. For a family habitual to a modern way of life, the transition had to be seamless and yet identifiable.

The project was an exercise of blending the local with the global. This is a home which embraces the local craftsmanship, material and vernacular flair in design without compromising on comfort and desired luxury.

Indian materials, ebullient colours associated with the land and plentiful sunlight makes this home worthy for a homecoming.

The design process began by corrective zoning of the apartment based on the client’s needs. Once the zoning was finalized, the next step was creating the material palette.

The designers explored the local markets of Pune and interacted with the artisans. Extensive contextual applications were explored.

Be it the inspired usage of stain glass, to the Paithani saris as tapestry, and from the custom designed handcrafted wooden furniture to the lime plaster application.
