The apartment is located at the tip of Malabar Hill, on the top floor, surrounded by water on three sides. The calming sea waters and natural daylight were the two main elements that governed the aesthetics and planning of the floor plate. This apartment is designed to be timeless, subtle yet stylish with coastal vibes and being visually soothing. The transitions between spaces were designed to be fluid. The apartment was designed for a young family of 4, Kaabia Grewal & Rushang Shah and their two kids – two years old boy and a new born baby boy. They are a hip and stylish couple – our frequency and aesthetics aligned together from day one. Rushang is the go-getter, practical, quick decision maker while Kaabia is the creative thinker. The flooring is standard beige marble given by the builder. The walls are differently treated in each room using lime as the base.

The living, bar and dining walls are wrapped up in grey lime stucco finish walls with white ceiling. The guest bedroom is wrapped in charcoal shade while the master bedroom is covered in chalky white granular finish reminiscent of Mediterranean homes. We have used two kinds of woods – ash wood and smoked oak wood with cane, black and brass details used consciously throughout the home. The basic shell was kept simple, neutral and soothing, such that the furniture and accessories can take the centre stage with their curves and edges details and materiality itself.
The house is designed as a fluid journey right from the entrance to the bedrooms, dotted with moments of curiosity to pause and admire by adding statement pieces. The idea was to make sure the habitant enjoys each space luxuriously without experiencing a similar moment again in the house. I prefer to design slow spaces which have this sense of calmness and timeless charm, without overstimulating the environment.
Person enters into a vestibule area, acting as a transition between the private and public. It has two mirrors atop smoked wood and cane shutter storage unit. The black fluted door, opens into the living, greeted by brown wooden console and bench.
Further ahead is the living room with tone on tone fabrics for the furniture. The three cane lamps grab the attention suspended above a smoked black coffee table on a geometric carpet. The sofa is wrapped in white boucle fabric. To the left is the ledge seating with striped fabric sitting cosily inset in the niche.
To the right is the twin love seat furniture pieces flanked by two pod coffee tables and a tall dracaena plant. For the love seat, Morii was commissioned to give the fabric which has intricate black stitch embroidery, a speciality of Kutch artisans. Above is the folding mirror of an odd shape, which adds its own dynamics to the space by capturing the space differently every time.
Person encounters the bar unit, covered in muted ceramic tiles and terrazzo table top, housing a wine fridge and glasses to host the guests on smart and sleek bar stools made of rattan, oak wood and black metal.
Can ignore it, as it was as given by the builder. The dining room is framed by the two black arches, overlooking the sea. It has charred wood table top with brass finish legs and walnut wood chairs.
The serving counter behind is of oak wood with Mediterranean blue kitkat tiles backsplash.
Master bedroom is a white room with oak, brass and cane details. The rust shaded fabric lounger at the window edge with circular oak tables. Idea is to keep it luxurious, stylish and zen at the same time.
2 yr olds kids room is a wild jungle themed room with jade green walls and nature inspired wallpapers and elements.
Newborn nursery is a soft and soothing white room giving the classy and fuzzy feel. Birds and animals are doodled on the walls with colourful eyes.
Guest bedroom is a black room with oak bed, grey shutters with wooden handles and a lounge chair with greens.
I feel the biggest challenge was to design and build in three months. Because we wanted to create a sexy, stylish and a luxurious home that aligned with my aesthetics, all within the timeline.
