The house that is made of more than just a 1250 sq.ft 3 bhk apartment at Powai is ready to become home to a couple and their one-year-old twins. The family wished their home embodied their love for travel and landscapes. Adding a twist to the Scandinavian design style, this home is all things nostalgia, texture and quaint colors. Ar. Arzu Jaria and Ar. Mandar Kamble, have poured in the travel memories of the client into the house, creating an abode of beaches, mountains, the tropics, starry nights and more.

Stepping into the house, it is hard to miss the curves, textures, patterns and various other eccentric design elements which were motivated by the client’s need for a quirky, out of the box look that was mainly child friendly.
The safety door, designed in fluted panels and curved to form an unconventional handle opens into a living room splashed in cool pastel enmeshed with textures that represent beaches such as water, sand and stone. The cubic shoe cabinet and various forms of storage spaces have been incorporated as a part of the monolithic TV console.
The rest of the living space comprises a 4-seater sofa finished with rich sand colour textured fabric, a pale blue fabric pouffe for 2 and 2 accent chairs with achromatic geometric patterned fabric that break the monotony of solid colours in the room.
The elegant contour print, hand tufted, wool & viscose rug from Jaipur rugs and the subtle blue flutes on the back wall not only tie the room together but also add to the theme of beaches. The pièce de resistance is the intriguing kirigami paper art framed in an irregular shape that tells the love story of our client right from the time they met in college to the day they bought this house.
Right across the console, separated by the sofa sits the dining area whose table is a unique assemblage of the leftover terrazzo & quartz stone on site that are moulded together in the form of waves reflecting the false ceiling design above it. In order to not compromise the overall height of the space, the only projections in the ceiling are the receding waves over the dining area adorned by twinkling lights representing a dinner under the stars on a beach.
The accent wall is carved with curved niches finished in light wood veneer and tan coloured leather laminate to house the family’s souvenirs. This leather laminate finish can also be found on doors paired with matt finish black handles.
The client wanted the house balcony to be embedded in nature but with the risk of kids digging into the mud pots, they were certainly contra planters. In an attempt to add this touch of nature, the designer installed a fabric ceiling that resembles a roof covered in fallen leaves recreating nature without potted plants.
Following this forest theme, the balcony has a bar unit, also called the bird’s nest, that is finished in a veneer design that opens up against a tropical backdrop of leaves and birds captured by the Marshalls wallpaper within.
The parallel kitchen has been designed in a dual tone of icy blue colour PU finish overhead cabinet and distressed tan colour PU finish on the under counter cabinets.
These two finishes are married with the black and white colour geometric pattern tiles on the back splash which adds movement to the space and breaks the monotony of plain colours.
The master bedroom is splashed in shades of blue particularly the eyeful intricate ring pattern blue veneer that is used on the wardrobe doors right across the curtains with water colour print of mountain ranges.
Amidst the muted tone of the room, it is hard to miss the beautiful abstract ink art inspired by mountains and splashes of water, constructing an interesting backdrop for the king size bed. This backdrop curves around the end of the bed, creating a niche for a study space in the corner.
The TV wall has been brought to life with circular panels two of which have been folded outward to serve as TV shelves. A corner of the room has been warmed up with a tan & cream colour lounging chair and a copper tan colour hand tufted rug from Jaipur rugs.
With twin kids, a girl and a boy, the clients were keen on eluding blue and pink for the room, allowing the designers to experiment with warm exciting colours such as orange and green.
With the colour tones in place and the kids’ love for animals in mind the bedrest materialized into a playful backdrop of carrots and cute bunny shaped headboard giving each kid one ear of their own.
Moreover, to introduce some more play space which would have been otherwise occupied by the bed, the designers decided to go with a murphy bed whose back merges right into the cabinets on its sides.
The wall across the bed has a customized wallpaper drawn from the family’s values with a white board laminate covering the bottom half of the same to let the kids explore their artistic side without caring for the walls.
The cloud shaped bookshelves on its either ends and the jungle inspired curtains beside it certainly adds the last bit of dreamy touch to the space.
The guest bedroom has been made much more welcoming by the combination of blush pink and sage green in a simple yet elegant design. Elements like the curved niches holding souvenirs and the tropical wallpaper by Kalakaari hath on the wardrobe ties the room with the rest of the house.
The capsule shape cutouts in self color on the wall with the blown glass side lamps create quite an aesthetic background for the queen size bed in the room. The space also has a cosy corner created with the swirly chair and the pink tint irregular shape rug from Jaipur rugs.
The contour ceilings and the irregular shape back lit mirror in the bathrooms reflect the patterns from the dining area. Each bathroom is lit with decorative ceiling lamps that flood the space with beautiful shadows. Additionally, the powder toilet has a modern tropical theme wallpaper over the dry area drawing on the landscape theme while adding in an amusing element.
