A family of 4, including two sons who are in their mid-twenties approached us to design their 800 sq.ft. home. Being a three-bedroom flat in a city like Mumbai, space constraints are the norm. The clients wanted a home that would feel vibrant, playful, fresh, and be very functional at the same time. We had to design a practical and efficient design that optimizes the available space and prioritizes functionality while considering the future requirements of a growing family. Well-designed lighting, modern aesthetics, comfortable living spaces and efficient utilization of space were the primary.

We first started the design by optimizing the layout and placement of furniture. We demolished unnecessary siporex partition walls, and placed large wardrobes as partitions, this created spacious and functional rooms. We designed partitions between rooms to have storage accessible from both sides and merge with the overall design without looking forceful.
The design of the living room integrates a thoughtful balance between lively hues and serene elements, resulting in a harmonious and inviting environment. A bright blue streak highlights the TV wall, and a pastel green shade adds character to the dining wall. We had to close the offset created by the column behind the sofa, so Instead of having dead paneling, we designed a mural using a combination of different curves and shapes. This adds depth and dynamism, transforming what would have been a plain and static panel into a vibrant and engaging feature of the living room.
The altar is placed on a wall that is centrally located and is clearly visible from every corner in the living room, allowing larger gatherings during prayer meetings to spread out throughout the extents of the living room and dining area.
A large painting enhances the dining corner, capturing attention with its bold and vibrant colors. It serves as a good backdrop and sets a pleasing tone for the dining area.
The walls of the living room are painted in a neutral shade to provide a subtle backdrop that allows the colors in the decor to shine. The furniture is a mix of modern and eclectic styles, featuring a variety of shapes and sizes. A plush, deep-blue sofa sits against one wall, and accent chairs adorned with vibrant throw pillows are placed at the window wall. A multi-colored terrazzo marble is used for the dining table top and other tops in the furniture and creates a mix of vibrant hues and intricate patterns, creating a visually striking surface.
The wooden paneling enhances the overall ambiance and complements the vibrant yet calming atmosphere that is created in the space. A combination of task lights, ambient lighting, and accent lighting is provided to create different moods and highlight key design features.
Warmer colors are used in the master bedroom. We wanted the master bedroom to have a pleasant yet lively aura in the interior. Light shades of ecru on the walls, with hues of wood features in this room. The headboard wall is covered with a patterned wallpaper that brings forth an elegant and fresh look to the space.
For both the sons’ rooms, we painted the walls with neutral colors, such as gray and ivory, creating a calm and sophisticated backdrop. This choice allowed us for versatility in decor and provides a timeless aesthetic. To add visual interest and a touch of modernity, shades of black are used as highlights in both the rooms.
While we designed one room’s headboard and walls with a black checkered pattern, we took a bolder approach with the other room.
The younger son’s room had to be designed as a gaming/multimedia room and also a bedroom. We painted the entire headboard wall in a dark grey color with an interesting groove pattern that hides hidden storages inside the wall.
This adds a dramatic touch, while the room also provides a space for working with a large work desk. Playful elements and an interior aesthetic with a satisfying beauty in its simplicity, that always feels fresh and blissful, was the essence for the design process of this home. Every room has a different yet unifying theme. A balanced combination of colors distinguishes every room with individual identities as per their function.
The overarching goal was to create a space that always offers a sense of joy and comfort to its inhabitants. Each room is adorned with carefully selected hues that not only enhance their intended purpose but also contribute to the overall aesthetic. Colors are chosen with intention, creating individual identities for each room while maintaining a cohesive feel throughout the home. For instance, the living room features a vibrant and energetic color scheme with bold splashes of contrasting tones, reflecting its role as a social hub and a space for family entertainment. In contrast, the bedrooms embrace softer shades or soothing neutrals to evoke tranquility and restfulness.
Most of the furniture in the interior was built with a functional approach that would be easy to use and maintain over time. We have tried to keep the spaces as open as possible with unforced and simplistic elements that contribute to its spatial aesthetics and the homeowner’s sense of practicality. The vibrant colors, combined with the thoughtful arrangement of furniture and artwork, make this home an inviting and energetic space that is both stylish and comfortable.
