  • A Thoughtful Amalgamation Of Traditional Beliefs And Modern Language | Studio DAT

The scope of the project was to design a modern and functional residence suited for a multi-generational family – dwelling under a single double storey unit in Noida. The design approach for the project was to inherently focus on the symbiotic relation between deep rooted traditional values of Indian societies and contemporary eclectic living in a technologically advanced world – emerging from the 2019 pandemic. A thoughtful amalgamation of traditional beliefs and modern language.

The project is a design partnership and collaboration between Studio DAT led by Shreya Kumar, and Koraa Design by Ankita Misra. The resultant is a charming blend of Shreya’s keen appreciation for modern Indian aesthetics and Ankita’s attention to details and craftsmanship.

The living areas seamlessly connect all bedrooms and private spaces functioning as the arterial passage through the house, by building a common visual dialogue connecting living area, dining and an open plan kitchen.

The bedrooms reflect on the individual character of the family members by introducing a sensitive character as a design element, while remaining mindful of the overarching values of the modern Indian household at the core of the design concept.

The color scheme is a blend of soothing neutral palette set against stark contrast using accent colors to create dramatic effects.

Through the clever use of sharp geometrical forms and interplay of different material technology, a coherent design scheme is developed creating not only well defined functional surfaces but also an informed visual sensibility.

The designers emphasis on expressing joinery details rather than concealing it – with the use of different groove details.

The overall material palette reflects the design ethos by demonstrating the versatile nature of almost every material used. As such, all surfaces and textures are composed in perfect harmony to deliver a timeless creation.

Vara Casa is a great example of progressive design philosophy that develops an ongoing dialogue between the habitat and the inhabitants, the product and the end-user. The design is adaptive in nature and provides sufficient breathing room for change without compromising the original design intent.

Studio DAT and Koraa together believe in the practice of architecture and interior design as a symbiotic relationship between nature and the built environment, with balance and ecological sustainability at the center.

Therefore, the project is mindful of maximum utilization of locally available building materials and enhanced form of construction techniques encouraging involvement of heritage crafts and materials.
