Nothing feels more like home than simple living spaces that are amped with comfort, accessibility and social engagement. While this notion may be constant for all age groups, it becomes a necessity for the elderly. Bringing this vision to reality for aged homeowners, an old shell has been renovated by Emergence Architects for the aged to call home. A conscious balance between slow design and experimentation, this project is not only a revival of its residents’ 50 year old home but also an idea of a dream retirement home rebuilt to provide solace, security and joy in their golden years.

Located in Indore and spanned across a plot size of 1100 sq.ft, this two bedroom bungalow has taken a 360 degree turn from an ordinary local house to a swanky up-scale home. Nestled among properties on all sides, the home faces inward to maintain privacy as well as natural light and ventilation. This contemporary canvas is painted in tones of grey, right from the planters to the compound wall to the facade cladding to the pergola and the terrace deck.

A metal staircase outside the main door steers towards the terrace deck that is perfect to host social gatherings or a family night out. This home is more than just a place to live. It is a haven where the senior owners could create new memories, enjoy each other’s company and look forward to many more happy years in their snug homely shelter.
Entrance through a small landscaped porch leads to a bright and airy living room. Large windows adorned with sheer curtains allow natural light to flood the space, making it feel inviting and cheerful.
The walls are painted in soft grey and white, devising a soothing ambience, while highlights of blue are found throughout the common areas.
The utilisation of laminate in shelves and doors enhances the appeal and practicality of the space. Plush armchairs and a cosy sofa beckon to relax and unwind after a busy day. With multiple planters scattered around the space, the home reflects the beauty of nature.
A full-length fluted glass door opens to the dining and kitchen. Combining functionality and aesthetics, the dining room is designed with attention to the owner and their requirements. Splashes of blue through dining chairs and wall planters imbue a sense of coolness to the room.
The rectangular skylight illuminates the dining area along with the kitchen, living and parent’s bedroom throughout the day with natural light. A tall oval cabinet in grey houses a small pooja space.
This charming corner of the home is ideal for the residents to socialise, play games, or simply have a hearty meal. The compact but functional kitchen treads on the design sense of the dining with blue and white cabinets.
A small transition space lit with openings, direct to the private lounge. This common lounge area crafted with a green sofa cum bed forms a meeting point for both bedrooms. A vision in green, this space features a nature-inspired wallpaper.
The master bedroom is adorned with tasteful decor, with a comfortable bed, soft linens and fluffy pillows. With a subtle backdrop of beige, the elongated headboard in mauve becomes the star of the room.
A cherished family photo is placed on one of the side tables, while a small planter takes up space on the other. Sliding doors of the wardrobe render a modish look and maintain space efficiency. A false ceiling floods the room with a warm glow.
Coordinating with the room, the attached washroom is crafted with numerous materials and textures from natural stone to a reflective surface in beige.
The parent’s bedroom is a portrait of powder blue, white and a soft tone laminate. With the bed placed in the centre, the wall behind it coalesces laminate, mirror, glass and panelling in blue. Due to space minimization, sliding doors are provided for the wardrobe.
The bed is flanked by a side drawer on one side and a quirky open display unit on the other. Painted in the same shade of blue, both the units accommodate charming curios and planters.
The common bathroom takes its colour inspiration from the common area , hence it is designed with blue and natural stone.
