The loft is a home that plays on this idea of creating forms to encapsulate memories. A home is a place where people live, create memories; come together to share experiences, create traditions – form emotional connections; be it birthday parties family dinners, or game nights to movie marathons. Countless memories that last a lifetime and beyond. Carving out a homely space in India’s bustling urban scenario demands panache, and outside-the-box thinking to make the smallest of spaces into stunning, efficient works of art. The lifestyle and routine of each family member had been the central source of inspiration. This well-lit and bright home displays functional aesthetics with finesse.
“Studio RE have implemented their vision in a very charismatic way. They have captured the character of every single family member to carve out their own space.”- Nishal Sevak(Co-Editor)

At Studio Re, we are highly inspired in spirit by the Japanese art of minimalistic living. Our clients, a young family of four, commissioned a modest and functional design for their Ahmedabad home. The wife, a homemaker, her husband, a senior chartered accountant, and their toddler – a highly social and hospitable family, fond of hosting guests and relatives frequently. Therefore, flexibility was key in the design-thinking process.
The apartment layout, furniture designs, and functional aesthetics of the home fit like a glove for its residents creating a coherent and meaningful whole. We envisioned a home that seamlessly intertwines various areas while maintaining privacy and transparency as required.
Our approach also draws heavy inspiration from the vernacular Indian space concepts, while embracing modern material aesthetics. The result is a series of obstruction-less spaces that intermingle and associate with each other, creating a harmonious and inviting living environment. In the Indian context, intermediate spaces hold a lot of value. Key elements act as space magnets that have been placed through the apartment such as a swing, breakfast table, movable study space, and a deck bed, all positioned to enrich a spatial experience as well as act as functional pivots.
One enters the house through a spacious vestibule, with a symbolic Lotus etching on the wall as a mark of good luck. The bottleneck opens into a large, combined living-dining space. The living room dons a combination of cool and warm undertones with its wood-finished furniture and cool blue fabrics. At the heart of the living space is the beloved traditional swing / hichko, a focal point that anchors the entire living and dining area and is a cherished spot for the family.
The kitchen overlooks the dining table and the intermediate interaction spot between the dining and kitchen is the breakfast table which serves as a spot for quick discussions over quick meals or evening teas – the breakfast table acts as a pivot between the kitchen and the dining. The tapestry in the dining has warmer undertones that contrast very well and provide a visible divide from the cooler tones in the living space.
While originally it was a four-bedroom apartment the family decided to combine two adjacent bedrooms to make up a master bed which includes a dedicated dressing space and Work-from-Home Office. The master bedroom and study area within are carefully intertwined to make use of ample daylight, while it also converts to a home theater space for a family recreation night. In the daughter’s bedroom, we opted to shift the bed to the side of a large window, creating a distinctive modulation in the flooring that doubles as a play area and a whiteboard, all while also basking in the natural light from the window. This transformational deck not only adds functionality but also lends a sense of whimsy and playfulness to the space. It also becomes an excellent study and activity zone. The guest bedroom has been designed to accommodate the needs of the elderly – it also homes an ornate temple space.
The materials used in this apartment are carefully curated- the teakwood veneer adds a touch of earthy elegance, while the white PU finish complements the dark gray floors. Back-painted glass, white Statuario marble, and ivory paint finishes are used to enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of the space. This combination makes this home a perfect place to unwind after a long day. The entire project was completed in the span of less than six months and within a budget of ₹2300/sqft. Simplicity truly is the ultimate sophistication.
