If you’re in the process of creating a home office space, keep the following tips in mind.
Partition off the space
Ideally, your home office will be in a completely separate room from your main living area. This allows you to close the door while working. Plus, having your office in a separate room also allows you to have some distance from work at the end of the day.
However, if you are unable to dedicate an entire room for an office, another way to create a separate working environment is to use a wall partition. This allows you to keep all work-related materials in one area.
If you’re struggling to find an area for an office space, consider clearing out a closet and putting a desk in there (if the closet is big enough). Again, this creates an area for all your work materials.
It can be easy to get distracted when working from home. No matter if you’re distracted by the television, a barking dog, or social media, your work productivity can go down. To be as productive as possible, find ways to distance yourself from distractions.
This could mean keeping all unnecessary electronics off during work hours or finding a babysitter to keep your young children occupied. Most employers will not allow you to have children in the room with you while you’re working.
A good tip is to keep a normal working routine, during which you start and stop working at the same hours. During those hours, create some distance from the rest of your household, so that you can remain focused on work.
Find the right chair and desk
If you’re going to be spending long hours in your home office, you’re going to want a comfortable chair and a good desk. Avoid working on the couch; this will limit your productivity.
When it comes to chairs, you’re going to want a cushioned chair that provides good lumbar support. Try to find one that is adjustable in height. While you’re working, your feet should remain flat on the floor, so that you can maintain proper posture.

Use good lighting
When possible, use natural light to light your office. Keep your desk near a window. Not only will this help prevent eye strain, but it also exposes you to Vitamin D, which can help boost your mood and keep you productive.
If using natural light isn’t possible, avoid using harsh overhead lights. These can cause eyestrain. Instead, keep a light by your table and use a lampshade. If you do not have a table light, the next best option is a lamp that points towards the ceiling instead of you.
You may be tempted to turn the lights off completely and work in ambient lighting. Don’t do this. Working in the dark can cause just as much eyestrain and headaches as harsh overhead lights can.
Finally, you’re also going to want to make sure to incorporate storage space into your office. Even if most of your files are online, you’re still going to acquire various work-related materials, such as books relevant to your industry.
Filing cabinets and bookshelves are ideal. Incorporate them into your space from the beginning and find an organizational system that works for you. Some filing cabinets slide under desks to minimize how much space they take up.
