  • When should you replace your HVAC?

When do you need to replace the HVAC system? This is the most common question that bothers homeowners. But, keep in mind that there is no one-answer-fits-all solution. Since the replacement isn’t that cheap, you would want to plan your budget. Read on and find out more about the different aspects!

    Repairs aren’t feasible

Maintaining the HVAC system might not be that cheap. Small fixes such s changing the air filters won’t take much money. But at the moment when the HVAC system needs costly repairs, be sure that it is time for a new one. If a repair costs more than 50% of the price for a new one, then it isn’t worth it.

Whether you perform repairs or want to change the HVAC system, be sure that you work with a reliable contractor. House Method summarizes the reviews for different contractors. You can choose the one that suits your needs the best.

The HVAC system is too old

The average lifespan of an HVAC system is 10 to 15 years.  After this, you should have it replaced. This depends on maintenance. If you have performed frequent checks and repaired minor problems once they appeared, you can prolong the lifespan. Neglected system won’t last for long, so you will need to replace it sooner. Keep in mind that the cost for the whole project can range from $5,000 to $9,000.

You notice a drastic rise in bills

Electricity bills are one of the indicators for faulty HVAC. The system uses electricity to work. As the years pass, the energy efficiency drops. If it uses more than the usual, you will notice this on the bills. If the same month is compared with other years, you can clearly see a difference.

    Temperature inconsistencies

As the system is aging, it will lose its power. It won’t be able to keep your home at a constant temperature. If you notice that you aren’t comfortable with the temperature, this can be a clear sign of an issue.

    Poor indoor air quality

One of the functions of the system is to improve indoor air quality. The ventilation system will remove pollen and dust from the air. When you clean the home, notice if there are any changes in the amount of dust present. If there is a lot more dust than usual, this might mean that the ventilation system isn’t working properly.

Also, look for any signs of mold through your home. Mold appears in rooms with high humidity. Since the ventilation needs to take the humidity away, the appearance of mold means that it isn’t working properly.

    Unusual sounds

A good functioning HVAC system is quiet when it is working. If you notice strange sounds that aren’t the normal thing that you are used to, it is time for a check. Also, look for any strange odors. Turn the system off and notice if there are any smells. Call a professional to inspect your HVAC system.
