Vital Construction Site Machinery

If you operate a construction site, you probably already know that some tools are a bit more essential than others. Without them, it would be almost impossible to complete certain jobs.

But if you’re not sure what these pieces are, keep reading. Below you’ll find some valuable machinery you’ll want to make sure your project is equipped with.

6 Essential Construction Site Machinery

  1. Forklifts

This machine is often overlooked in construction projects, but it’s one of the most important. Forklifts help workers quickly move items around the job site. Besides making the task go by faster, forklifts also add a level of safety because they prevent workers from overexerting themselves. For example, instead of pushing and lifting a heavy wood pallet, workers can place it on the forklift and move it faster to its designated area.

To ensure that your forklift can fully get the job done, it might be worth investing in fork extensions. The customizable extensions are constructed of steel and have a tapered design that guarantees that large and heavy loads are secure. Besides making it easier to move objects, these extensions also keep the items from scratching against the machinery, which helps keep it durable.

  1. Soil Compactors

A soil compactor is key if you need to level out the ground before building. Also known as a rammer, this device uses a heavy drum to compact the soil so that it’s even. This creates friction which in return increases the bearing capacity.

Because each construction site is unique soil compactors come in a handful of variations like:

  • Wobbly rollers
  • Vibratory rollers
  • Trench rollers
  • Padfoot compactors
  • Rammers
  • Forward-plate compactors

To determine the right one, you’ll want to check the soil type you’re working with. If it’s cohesive (fine), you’ll want to look at padfoot options, which have a textured roller to prevent it from sticking into the grooves. On the other hand, vibratory rollers might be ideal for non-cohesive (thick) soil because they can safely press large pieces into the ground.

  1. Bulldozers

Perhaps one of the most noticeable construction site machinery is a bulldozer. Whether it’s a small or large project, the device can be found digging holes or lifting debris. It’s also very versatile so you can safely use it on most terrains.

Bulldozers come in a few different types. Some you’ll come across include:

  • Crawlers
  • Mini
  • S-Blade
  • U-Blade
  • Shiphold
  • Hybrid

Besides its form, you’ll want to consider a few other aspects like its:

  • Technology
  • Price
  • Attachments
  • Maneuverability
  1. Excavators

These machines remove soil to make foundations and trenches. They’re built with power so this machine is ideal for heavy-duty work. Despite their size, they can carefully work in sensitive areas making this device a must for any construction project.

Some excavator types you’ll come across include:

  • Crawler (built for small projects)
  • Wheeled (designed for road work)
  • Mini (for small areas)
  • Skid steer (contains a bucket and boom to remove items)
  • Suction (features water jets to clean debris)
  • Dragline (has a hoist system making so it’s perfect for marine construction)

Excavators can be pricey, so if you’re on a budget, you might want to rent the machine. While you won’t own it and will need to follow provider rules, it’s a useful way to obtain this strong machine.

  1. Cranes

If you plan on building tall structures or need to lift heavy materials, cranes are crucial. Not only can they hoist all types of items, but especially those that tend to be problematic, like concrete slabs. In addition, while other machinery can do the same job, they don’t always have the same stability as cranes do. This makes them good to use for both small and large tasks.

As with other construction machinery, cranes come in a variety of different styles. Some are:

  • Hammerhead
  • Telescopic
  • Tower
  • Stacker

Many states require that a crane operator be fully licensed. This makes certain that they’re legally qualified to operate it.

  1. Dump Trucks

You’ll likely need to haul away dirt or old materials during construction – something dump trucks can assist with. Unlike other trucks that can only haul away a certain weight limit, dump trucks are built for heavy-duty work. On average, they can transport up to 14 tons per load.

Besides taking debris away from the site, these vehicles can move items around it. If you need to move a soil pile to another part of the site, dump trucks can quickly complete the job and move on to other tasks.

There are plenty of machines that you can use on civil construction sites, but some are a bit more important than others. If you want to make sure that your job has the right tools, be sure to keep the information above in mind. With it, you can confirm that your construction site is operating to its fullest potential.
