This Stone-Clad Villa is an Inviting Showcase of Modern Rustic Houses | Kasha Design

Tucked away in the folds of the Sahyadri hills, this 6,500-square-foot villa offers a sanctuary far removed from Mumbai’s restless rhythm. The design of the home is inspired by the client’s fondness for North India’s hill stations, places where old-world sentiment naturally blends with the appeal of modern rustic houses. A harmonious palette of muted earth tones and vintage accents lends the home a lived-in warmth. Adorned with Kota stone, teak wood, and granite, each room has been crafted to honour the natural landscape while maintaining a luxurious, airy atmosphere. This villa isn’t just a home – it’s an invitation to unwind and reconnect with nature.

From the outset, the home grounds you in materiality. The rich texture of green Kota stone weaves through each room in two finishes that lend a unique interplay of patterns and shades, echoing the surrounding landscape. The French doors in the foyer usher in natural light from the living and dining rooms. When opened, they create a single expansive space, welcoming the gentle breeze that drifts in from the winding hills.

Living Room

The living room is an elegant blend of classic and contemporary design, featuring the client’s cherished art and curios. A standout feature is the study niche, anchored by a bold teak wood and glass shelving unit that peeks into the foyer. The niche’s Katni marble desk, complemented by a teak wood chair, expresses the villa’s palette of quiet earth tones.

Dining Room

The dining room opens to the sun-drenched deck and pool set against sweeping hill views. Resplendent in emerald green tiling, the pool and jacuzzi appear to blur into the treetops beyond, creating a seamless visual extension of the landscape.

Underfoot, vitrified tiles laid in a herringbone pattern lend rhythm to the space, while a built-in bench finished in Baroda green marble ties the palette together. A striking black granite border defines the space, complemented by grey Kota stone laid in a rubble-inspired pattern that draws from the basalt clad columns of the house.

Wrapped in dusky blue cement tiles and grounded by smooth grey Kota flooring, the powder room provides a tactile contrast to the striking stone basin. In the kitchen, tradition meets modern functionality. Teak and cane cabinetry is paired with a stately emerald green island, fluted glass cabinets, and framed photographs of the surrounding terrain.

A First Floor that Revels in Warmth and Whimsy

Textured walls adorn the stairwell, capturing the sun’s hues from the skylight above. A metal and wood staircase leads to the first floor. There, a multi-textured ochre-toned Kota flooring, bordered by warm wooden tones, adds depth and warmth to the space. A cozy family room is lined with a spacious daybed – the perfect spot for movie nights or board games. Designed for togetherness, it effortlessly brings everyone closer through shared moments. The powder room is clad in Indian Pink Marble that flows seamlessly over the walls and counter. Moreover, it integrates a concealed drawer, enhancing both function and elegance.

The master bedroom offers a serene retreat, featuring a wrought iron bed that faces expansive lake views. Moreover, the en-suite layers Italian marble, textured neutrals, and an outdoor-like stepping stone flooring to enhance the sense of calm luxury.

The son’s bathroom embraces a darker palette, where Brazilian marble meets textured walls. A built-in tub seems to rise from the floor itself,  sculpted in place for a raw-luxe effect.

The daughter’s bedroom channels the whimsy of a treehouse, its island bed surrounded by glass that offers sweeping valley views. Tucked discreetly behind the headboard, a desk offers a quaint work-from-home nook, effortlessly integrated into the room’s design.

Facing west, the bedroom catches the soft glow of the setting sun. As a result, the space is bathed in warm tones of amber and pink.

Light from the adjacent pool reflects gently onto the walls, creating a quiet play of shadows that shifts as day turns to dusk. Her bathroom continues the narrative of organic elegance, with ochre stone-effect tiles, classic flutes, and Indian marble.

An Elevated Panorama

At the pinnacle of the villa lies the “Machaan,” an airy space designed for quiet reflection. As you step in, it unfolds to reveal an unhindered panorama of the valley beyond. A slanted parapet becomes what you need it to be. Whether as a backrest or a perch, it offers comfort as you lean against it and watch the sun melt into the valley.

A Timeless Retreat Amidst Nature

Simple interventions, like strategic openings for connectivity, window benches, and a thoughtful mix of furniture including daybeds and study niches, enhance the original shell. As a result, they carve out charming nooks and spaces that are as functional as they are inviting. With its soul steeped in nostalgia and its spirit firmly rooted in nature, the villa creates a timeless experience, a perfect oasis to slow down and recharge.
