  • This Sea Facing House in Bandra has an Indisputable Charm | Pure Design Studio

The main intent was to create a house in Bandra that felt like a continuation of the bay. “There’s an indisputable charm to a sea facing Mumbai home, isn’t there? My very first visit to this 1100 sq. ft. 3BHK, in Tony Bandra, got me thinking of the myriad ways and designs I could breathe life into this property. But the client brief helped me to rein in my creative horses,” laughs Pratik Shah, Principal Designer, Pure Design Studio. “In terms of design, they desired a modern and contemporary abode, minimalistic yet warm,” he adds. Three generations of lawyers live here, and their home had to reflect their erudition and lifestyle. We decided to fit this home out with a decided air of understated luxury and design it as an extension of the Arabian Sea.

    The Living Room

As you pass through the passage of this house in Bandra, which has a shoe cabinet, you step into a spacious vista. An elegant, well-appointed living room overlooking the wondrous Arabian Sea lies here. Here’s a medley of greys, blues, and mauve pinks, all tied together in a bouquet of neutrals.

A monolith L-shaped sofa in grey is complimented by pink cushions. Across this are two pink winged armchairs, which flank a set of nested tables. In the middle is an interesting piece of furniture: a Patagonia quartzite top centre table that houses four monochrome pouffes in grey and blue.

As the family loves to entertain, these make for extra seating when guests throng this seaside house in Bandra. All this is tied in by a luxurious rug from Jaipur Rugs in a silver sea moss shade.

It has tones of grey, blue, and cream, representing the monsoon sky, just about to drop the first raindrops of the season.

Sheer curtains grace the large French windows, perfect for enjoying the peaceful waves. Indoor greens create a cheery vibe. This common area is an emphatic statement that less is more and simplicity is true elegance.

The open floor plan here meanders to the dining area. A marble slab, mimicking the green, briny foam outside, sits atop wooden legs in a giant V that defines this space.

Luxurious chairs upholstered in our signature blue and grey fabric face a bench on the other side. A sideboard in grey with brown herringbone texture panels provides storage and adds warmth.

    The Kitchen

The kitchen is sleek, and contemporary, and uses space effectively. To open up yet merge the common areas, we created a puncture in the wall between the kitchen and dining table.

It adds an air of spaciousness and a fun element. It definitely provides easy access and saves time for this busy family. We fitted the slender kitchen with ample storage and designated areas for different appliances.

    The Master Bedroom

A corridor that takes us to the inner sanctum ends with an artwork of a serene Buddha in neutral tones. Next to it is the master bedroom. A wide room with two full-length windows, one of which is also a corner window. We’ve fashioned it like a pristine sandy beach.

Almost an homage to the beauty and serenity of a white-to-beige palette, this bed chamber instantly soothes the senses. A bed to the right is flanked by two side tables.

They are fully clad in fabric and provide an interesting touch of whimsy. A muted-tone rug adds cosiness. Across is a wardrobe in white with a small but well-appointed desk space, complete with a shelf and storage.

We provided a Roman ceiling with cove lighting. The ensuite washroom is a balance of elegance and functionality, with a luxurious onyx counter.

    The Son’s Bedroom

Our inspiration here was the horizon that can be seen from the window. This room boasts two colours- grey & white. Hence, we decided to play with texture to add some excitement. The headboard is grey velvet with geometric shapes to mimic choppy waves.

It faces an interesting wall, half of which is a veneer with grooves that copy the geometric shapes of the headboard. It houses a collapsible, wall-mounted table that can be pulled down for quick perusal.

The other half of the wall is covered in charcoal grey fabric. Adjacent to this is a seamless full-height pastel grey wardrobe.

In keeping with the bedchamber, the attached bathroom is also contemporary and tidy. It has grey Pietra tiles with a lovely pink onyx wash basin. The flooring is terrazzo, complemented by black marble countertops.

    The Grandparent’s Room

This is a functional yet elegant space, as it is the smallest of three bedrooms. Used sparingly by visiting relatives or guests, we decided to base it on a dark monsoon cloud. Here lies a single bed in a green upholstery so dark it resembles an angry cloud. The walls are off white, with the curtains in beige fabric with green patterns. There’s also a wardrobe to provide more storage for the homeowners.

Across the corridor from the bedroom, is a powder room done in tones of cool and contemporary grey. This is since it complements the living room as well as the guest bedroom.

This gorgeous, sea-facing home is the stuff of dreams in a bustling city thirsting for open spaces to enjoy the great outdoors. Hence, we decided to capitalise on the wonderful views and location to create a more biophilic space and invite the vast seascape indoors.
