This Minimal Apartment Design Transforms Two Units Into A Tranquil Urban Home | Build TLA

The client, a mental health consultant, approached us to design her new home in the western suburb of Mumbai. She effectively wanted to combine her two 1 BHK apartments into a singular space for a family of two, including herself. As they are older, their brief was simple: to have a clear and clean apartment design with minimal pop colours & dreamy corners. They also specified that they host a lot of people on a regular basis. With that note, we initiated the design process.

The apartment design is tailored to meet the functional needs and aesthetic preferences of older residents in Mumbai, while accommodating their work-from-home requirements.

The primary hosting space, also known as the living room, features an end-to-end wall carpet, creating a designated activity zone with living room items arranged along the room’s edge.

The strategic placement of the sofa by the window allows for both TV viewing and cityscape enjoyment from the 23rd floor or sometimes even a sunset. A cozy lounge serves as a perfect reading corner for the avid reader client.?

On-site Challenges

Addressing on-site challenges, we successfully tackled water leakage issues in the living room with a specialized textured paint solution, resulting in a subtle beige tone. To enhance the verticality of the space, sleek wood bands and concealed electrical distribution boards were seamlessly integrated with wall panels in variable color tones which can be changed whenever required.

The kitchen is a clean slate with all functional requirements consisting of simple pull trays that enable easy access to daily appliances. Additionally, soft pink, soft beige, light wood and neutral shades complete the design.

In one of the 1BHK layouts, the kitchen, common washroom, and master washroom were transformed into a private master bedroom with a dedicated study room (from the kitchen space) and a walk-in wardrobe from a washroom space.

Ample storage solutions were crafted by utilizing existing features like columns and beams, with a color palette dominated by neutral tones and enhanced by subtle black accents. The curves and textures make the space full of life. Additionally, block-printed fabrics sandwiched in glass add elegance to the overall space.

For the single parent’s living space, we introduced playful curves, fluted textures, and a dreamy misty tropical wallpaper. This was to evoke a soothing ambiance during rest.

Design Approach

This design approach ensures a harmonious balance between functionality and aesthetics. Moreover, it is carefully addressing the residents’ practical needs and personal preferences.
