This Comfortable House is a Place to Unwind with Space for their Son to Play | Studio Barikee

“Samarpan,” located in the heart of Bhopal, is an entertainment-focused and comfortable family house enriched with functional yet beautiful design elements. The design is rooted in the client’s vision of creating comfortable, enduring spaces that effortlessly cater to social gatherings and a young family’s daily lives. Balancing busy careers with the joys of raising a young son, the owners sought to create a family sanctuary—a place to unwind with ample space for their son to play. At the same time, they wanted a comfortable house where they could host gatherings with friends and family, prompting us to craft the layout around a light-filled kitchen, expansive dining area and sunken drawing room.

Our client wanted a comfortable house that would epitomize opulence and comfort. Their brief: though split into multiple levels, the spaces should merge and somehow stay interconnected with each other.

Intelligent Space Planning

We achieved this not just through intelligent space planning but also by bringing in a consistent palette of surfaces, colours, textures, patterns, treatments, accessories, and materials.

The entrance opens into a short passageway that leads to a drawing room flooded with natural light. One enters the vast space that sports an autumn colour palette.

The design features multiple clusters of seating, allowing users to choose based on their mood and activity. “The main element in the drawing room is the floor-to-ceiling veneer-panelled wall with tile that anchors the space. Everything else works to give a harmonious, understated elegance to the space.”

Minimal Design Elements

Climbing to another level is the dining area, with a glimpse of the open kitchen. Minimal-looking dining chairs upholstered in beige and tan flank the wooden dining table, which is illuminated by wallpaper on the ceiling.

This, along with seating behind the dining with a hanging backrest, gives the room a modern but warm vibe. The skylightace introduces a sense of drama to the interior.

One of its large walls serves as a canvas for circular silhouettes of traditional patterns created with texture paint.

Muted Colours and Organic Lines

At the other end of the dining room is the mother’s bedroom. Soft organic lines and muted colours bring a sense of calm and sophistication to this bedroom. Natural light floods this area, reflecting the homeowners’ requirement for a light, bright, and easy space.

The sliding glass doors that open to a big balcony give a sense of continuity with the outdoors and create the openness and airiness of this bedroom.

The master bedroom is a simple yet chic affair. The focal element of the room is the bed’s backdrop—a wall panelled in wallpaper and a giant headboard.” The master bedroom is divided into three zones: a bed with side tables, a cosy seating area, and a walk-in wardrobe.

The color palette has been kept neutral with teak veneer defining the space,” Design that is timeless should feel both of-the-moment and everlasting. It should seem effortlessly elegant and be able to balance practicality with style.

Serene and Warm

The client wanted a home that exuded a serene vibe with warm, engaging spaces, but also had its share of quirky elements. The lounge area between the master’s and son’s bedrooms is the client’s den. We imagined the space a little differently from the rest of the house. All the furniture was custom-made by us to reflect the lifestyle and personality of the homeowners. The house unfolds to visually connect different zones while still maintaining the necessary privacy.

Across the lounge area is the son’s bedroom. A brick accent wall punctuates the space with rusticity, creating an informal ambience.

An exposed brick wall, painted white, adds a hint of visual texture. To enhance the muted material and colour palette, we included elements like striking neon artwork and unique decor accessories.

Intricate Details

A wide study desk and hand-doodled shutters for books bring in storage and add to the functionality of the room.

The second floor also has a family lounge. “The decor here is subtle but is enhanced by the vibrant bottle green and tan sofa, along with the dramatic Bollywood-inspired paintings on the cabinet. Thus, wood-finished floors and a veneer ceiling maintain a warm ambience.”

“Simplicity of form and function, coupled with a focus on functionality, durability, and longevity of materials and finishes, were paramount considerations in shaping the interiors.”

Hands-on Collaborative

“For this home that was spread across so many rooms and spaces, the key challenge for us as designers was to bring in a design language that bound everything together into one cohesive unit.” “The design aims to evoke serenity for the homeowners. A hands-on collaboration with the homeowners was integral to the project’s success, ensuring a cohesive design thread throughout the project and influencing decisions related to natural light, colour, and the overall relationship of the home to the garden and street.“ We ensured that every design decision, from the presence of natural light to the choice of colours and the relationship to the outdoors, reflected their style.
