  • This Colourful Home Design Evokes Liveliness for its Dwellers | SORA Design Studio

Adapting to the needs of its residents is always central to the design of any space. For this residence – a colourful home design in Bikaner for a family of three – a couple and their son – the story of the family and their lifestyle choices has helped shape the perfect home.

    Planning

The planning bifurcates private and semi-public spaces. Along with the ground floor specifically dedicated to the frequently visiting guests of the homeowner. The family resides on the first and second floors. Hence, keeping in mind the privacy of the members as well as better ventilation opportunities at a higher level.

    Embedding Lively Colours

The husband, a doctor by profession, spends a large part of his time in a high-stress environment. Hence, embedding a colourful home design and a lively home that induces happy emotions was a priority. From hand-painted frescos to two-storeyed mixed-media wall art, each space in the home surprises you with an eye-catching, personalised element, intended to create a joyful experience.

    Ground-Floor Functions

The ground floor also hosts a gathering hall and a swimming pool at the rear end of the home.
An artistic, textured backdrop for the pool features a nostalgic wall feature design that hints at
the landscape scenery every child learns to draw in the early years.

    colourful home design

Embracing colour in a world flooded with everything muted, the designers opted for a bold yet soothing palette for the space. Upon entering through the foyer on the ground floor, one is first greeted by a warm artwork on the wall paired with a vintage chair reupholstered and brought back to life.

The space opens up into a guest bedroom as well as the drawing room, which is adorned in the shades of pink, beige and brown.

    Stairwell Design

On the way to the first floor, the passage opening up to the second entrance of the home embraces a verandah style of setup with the staircase design, encouraging a more informal gathering space inspired by the homes from ancient times. The flooring and ceiling pattern has been coordinated and mirrored within the length of the passage to create a balanced visual in the space.

    First-Floor Functions

The stairwell opens up on the first floor into the dining space with the kitchen and living room on either side. The three common spaces are intentionally planned in a linear way to promote maximum interaction and visual connection between the small family of three at all times. The dining space hosts a unique dining table in handcrafted granite paired with tan leather finish chairs. The choice of material adds contrast to the black glass chandelier (which converts into a fan) as well as the wall clock artwork in the backdrop.

    Living Area

The double-height living space is chic, bold and high-fashion. With an 18 ft tall mixed-media wall feature – a show-stopper element for the home – the space is perfect to lounge at home in style. Breaking the monotony within the rectangular space, the grid pattern has been interpreted in various ways – whether on the sofa set, the art feature or the wall panelling.

    Embedding Thermal Comfort

The second design challenge was to adapt thermal comfort in the extreme climatic conditions of Bikaner. As a result, floor-to-ceiling north-facing windows flank the living space, flooding it with indirect sunlight while effectively evading the heat. In order to avoid the harsh morning Sun, no fenestration has been provided on the Eastern facade of the house. Protecting the indoors from the West face.

    Mandir

The small mandir adjacent to the living space features a lotus morphed into a shell shaped pedestal in marble for the brass deities. The light shines from behind the pedestal representing rays of the Sun through the grooves on the marble back wall.

    Master Bedroom

The master bedroom is inspired by Japanese style interiors, reflecting calm and zen elements with defined and proportionate artistry. The hand painted artwork on the leather head board represents the serenity found in nature and adds a touch of grace into the space.

The master bathroom blends royal, heritage-inspired elements with a contemporary touch, creating a space that feels both timeless and luxurious.

    Son’s Bedroom

For the son’s bedroom, the brief was simple – sky is the limit. Taking a literal cue, the artistic elements in this space draw inspiration from the sky, birds, and clouds. We translated the layered geometry of clouds into the design of both the headboard and the room’s door panel, creating a cohesive and whimsical atmosphere.

The powder room offers drama and opulence. With bold tiling and custom made brass sink, the space appears to have windows on the rear end due to the concealed lights installed.

    Second-Floor

The second floor hosts a guest bedroom which opens up to a stunning terrace area perfect for watching the sunset and unwinding. We painted the space in an earthy red, laid yellow floor tiles, and lined the edges with greenery. Creating a grounded, semi-open zone that remains comfortable even during Bikaner’s scorching summer days.

We designed the home to be an inviting space, bringing every detail to life with precision and care. It not only appears as a dream space to live in, but is quite literally as functional for its residents.
