When one imagines a home inspired by South Indian style, the mind conjures an air of vernacular warmth—wooden tones, saturated hues, and the scent of sandalwood mingling with earthy nuances. ‘Vasudhalayah’ brings these images to life, transforming them into a 5000 sq ft abode in Bengaluru, where Mediterranean design sensibilities subtly echo through the fusion of traditional nostalgia and the pragmatism of modern living.
Editor’s Note: Vasudhalayah carries the ease of homecoming. It doesn’t try to impress; it simply embraces. With its quiet charm and lived-in grace, the home feels familiar yet new, holding space for everyday moments to settle, stretch, and belong. ~Isha Bora
This Bengaluru Home Redefines Mediterranean Design Through Tradition | Simplécede
Vasudhalayah is a sanctuary for a spiritually inclined family, a couple with three kids and a canine companion. Having returned to India after a lengthy sojourn overseas, the Palakkad-origin family yearned to reconnect with their South Indian heritage, which dictated their brief of a home that echoes the cultural richness of their roots.
Framing the entrance to the expansive communal space, antique Chettinad pillars and a traditional swing create a warm welcome.
The living room is enlivened by a striking yellow wall representing the quintessential color of a bold Indian palette.” An ensemble of furniture curated from Kursi Studio, complemented by wooden rafters and terracotta planters, underpins the earthy mien of this space.
Adjoining in free-flow, the dining area features a live edge table, anchored by an intricately carved wooden panel.
Tucked between two crockery units, an expansive window bathes the space in light, while a bay seating nook along its length offers a cozy perch for the family’s frequent gatherings and social affairs.
The kitchen is delineated by a refined wood and glass door. Thus, artfully balancing the openness and seclusion. Inside, the area comes alive with another yellow counterpart in the form of piccolo tiles for the backsplash, paired with ceramic patterned tiles underfoot.
As one ventures towards the private spaces, the home takes on a new avatar, seamlessly shifting from its traditional lexicon to embrace a modern flair. Boasting a fusion of classic details with contemporary elements, the family space underscores this transition.
In the home office, an emerald green wall draws the gaze, marked with floating shelves that exhibit the globetrotting family’s curios. Outside this room, a crafted alcove cradles their beloved dog, mirroring the foyer’s brickwork.
Awash in sunlight, the master suite is a peaceful haven in blue and white, interspersed with earthy touches. The children’s rooms, equipped with bunk beds and sleek study units, maximize play and creativity.
Yet, they diverge in their identities: the daughters’ bedroom delights with a soft pink ambiance and white oak details, while the son’s room illustrates a bold narrative with a contrasting palette of deep blue and vibrant orange.
Through pensive design choices, Vasudhalayah pays a heartfelt homage to the patrons’ lineage. At the same time, it provides a nurturing abode for their future. It resonates with a soulful essence, where memories are woven into the very fabric of the space. The sense of belonging deepens with each passing day.
