In this conversation, Ar. Dishin Shah reveals his journey into the world of interior and design.
My journey into the realm of design began with a fascination for the built environment. The combination of architecture and landscape design has provided me with a unique perspective on design. As an architect, I understand the importance of functional and aesthetically pleasing structures. As a landscape designer, I appreciate the role of nature in creating harmonious and sustainable environments. These two disciplines complement each other perfectly, allowing me to design spaces that are both beautiful and functional.
My passion for design stems from creating meaningful spaces that positively impact lives. Whether designing sustainable urban developments or restoring historic landscapes, I aim to craft environments that are both visually appealing and beneficial to communities. Consequently, I pursued a degree in architecture, where I developed a deep appreciation for the relationship between buildings and nature. This realization not only enhanced my focus on efficient spaces but also sparked an interest in landscape design.
The desire for creative freedom and the ability to make a meaningful impact drove me to establish my own interior design studio. As an independent designer, I could pursue my personal vision, experiment with new ideas, and build strong relationships with clients.
My design philosophy centers around creating spaces that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing while prioritizing sustainability and well-being. I incorporate natural elements, use eco-friendly materials, and design layouts that foster a connection to the environment. My goal is to create spaces that are beautiful and enhance the occupants’ quality of life.
My design inspirations come from a diverse range of sources, including nature, art, culture, travel, and personal experiences. I draw inspiration from various sources to create innovative designs that reflect my style and meet my clients’ needs.
To establish my signature style, I focused on my core values, personal preferences, and client feedback. By combining these elements, I’ve developed a unique design aesthetic that distinguishes me in the competitive field of interior design.
My core values of sustainability, creativity, collaboration, ethics, and compassion guide my approach to work. I strive to create sustainable, innovative, and ethical designs that enhance the quality of life for individuals and communities.
The Red House project challenged me to create a minimalist interior that exuded luxury and sophistication. By carefully selecting materials and organizing space, I elevated the minimalist aesthetic, creating a warm, inviting, and visually stunning living environment. The project challenged me to explore the possibilities of minimalist design, resulting in an exceptional living space.
In today’s tech-driven world, SketchUp, augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR) are invaluable tools for architects and designers. SketchUp, with its intuitive interface, allows for rapid 3D modeling and visualization. AR and VR offer immersive experiences that help clients and stakeholders visualize designs realistically. By combining these tools, designers can collaborate effectively, iterate quickly, and provide clients with a more engaging and informative experience.
A well-designed interior space can significantly influence a user’s mood, productivity, and overall well-being. By carefully considering lighting, color, materials, and layout, designers can create environments that promote relaxation, concentration, and creativity. For instance, natural light and calming color palettes can reduce stress and improve mood. Additionally, ergonomic furniture and organized layouts can enhance productivity. By incorporating these elements, I aim to craft spaces that look beautiful and foster a positive, productive atmosphere.
When choosing a material palette, I carefully consider the design language, client aspirations, and the overall atmosphere I want to create. I explore a wide range of materials, evaluating factors such as durability, sustainability, aesthetics, and budget. By understanding the client’s preferences and the project’s functional requirements, I can select materials that not only complement the design but also enhance the overall user experience.
To stay inspired and motivated, I enjoy traveling, reading, spending time in nature, and listening to music. These hobbies broaden my perspective, provide valuable insights, and help me relax and recharge. They offer a valuable counterbalance to my work as a designer and contribute to a fulfilling lifestyle.
The most fulfilling aspect of interior design for me is the positive impact that well-designed spaces can have on people’s lives. Seeing how my designs contribute to a client’s happiness, productivity, or overall well-being is incredibly rewarding. Whether it’s creating a serene home environment, a stimulating workspace, or a welcoming public space, I find immense satisfaction in knowing that my work has made a positive difference.
As I continue to grow as an interior designer, I am committed to lifelong learning, building strong relationships, embracing sustainability and technology, and giving back to the community. By focusing on these areas, I hope to contribute to the industry and make a positive impact on the world through my design work.
Beyond professional achievements, I hope to leave a legacy of sustainable and inclusive design. I aspire to inspire others to create environments that prioritize the well-being of individuals and the planet. By showcasing the positive impact of thoughtful design choices, I hope to encourage a shift towards more sustainable and equitable living practices. My goal is to leave a lasting impression on the world by creating spaces that not only look beautiful but also contribute to a better future for all.
