Nobody talks about May like they should in Sacramento. Everyone complains about July and August, the weeks when your home becomes a health hazard. But May is when the damage actually starts, or more accurately, when you can still do something about damage that’s already there. Spring moisture, along with fast-rising heat, is a bad combination for wood, caulk, paint, and roofing. By the time most homeowners notice something’s wrong, summer has already done three months of quiet work on their exterior. So here’s what to actually look at before the heat locks in and get timely wood rot repair in Sacramento.

Touch Your Wood Before You Look at It

Your hand catches things your eyes miss. 

Walk the perimeter and press on wooden surfaces: 

• Window sills, 
• Door casings, 
• Fascia boards, 
• Any trim near the roofline or close to grade. 

What you’re feeling is real. Solid wood doesn’t move. Compromised wood has a softness to it, almost like pressing on a dry sponge.

Sacramento’s wet winters saturate exterior wood. Then heat arrives fast and locks that moisture inside before it fully dries. That’s when fungal decay takes hold, not visibly, not dramatically, just quietly behind paint that still looks fine from the street.
