  • Redesign of 125-year-old Generational House Blends Modernity and Heritage | The Saar Studio

The redesign of the 125-year-old generational house strikes a delicate balance between honouring and preserving its rich history and embracing modernity. The fact that it’s nestled in the heart of a planned British residential area makes this project have deep significance.

Editor’s Note: “Situated in a historic British enclave, a 125-year-old generational house undergoes a poetic transformation. This redesign delicately intertwines the echoes of its rich past with contemporary elegance, creating a sanctuary where history and modernity embrace. This masterpiece honors tradition while celebrating the present.” ~Simran Khare

    The Challenge

The existing structure showcases a blend of load-bearing and R.C.C. additions from three generations. This architectural mosaic presents a unique challenge. Preserving the essence and originality of the bungalow while updating it for contemporary living demands a nuanced and a thoughtful approach.

    The Making

The entrance porch, described as an embrace, sets the tone for the entire redesign. The rustic flooring finishes and the traditional “Katta” seating overlook the cultivated greens. This creates a welcoming and serene atmosphere that fosters a connection to both nature and tradition.

Inside, the main living spaces reflect a harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary aesthetics. The traditional teakwood ceilings, once hidden by false ceiling roofs, now stand proudly exposed, retaining their original charm and regality.

The flooring, with its distinguished yellow hue amidst neutral tones, adds a touch of vibrancy to the space while still maintaining an earthy feel.

The double-height, sloping roof and veneer-clad columns add a sense of grandeur, enhancing the space’s authenticity with a traditional Wada look.

The bedrooms combine modern and traditional styles, offering a comfortable and stylish retreat.

The use of vitrified flooring in shades of kota adds a modern touch, while matching furniture that echoes the old teak used in doors and windows ties the design elements together.

A unique feature in the redesign is the use of sandwich glass for wardrobe shutters, which pays homage to the historical occupation of the clients as cloth merchants. This contemporary twist not only adds functional value but also respects and celebrates the space’s historical significance.

    Conclusion

This fusion of classical and contemporary elements creates a timeless abode that tells a story of its past while paving the way for a modern future. Overall, the redesign successfully preserves the bungalow’s historical significance while infusing it with fresh energy and functionality, resulting in a space that feels both familiar and excitingly new.
