Organic Modern Interior Design in The House of Contours Embraces Softness | Design Hex

The House of Contours is like a warm embrace of a cozy Tulum home amidst the harsh concrete jungle of skyscrapers in an opulent yet chokingly cluttered part of the city of Mumbai. The organic modern interior design of space is conceptualized around soft contours and layers, wrapped in the most soothing earthy hues that offer a delicate comfort to the eyes as the light effortlessly plays its charm on the curves that seem carefully chiselled across the ceilings, walls, and flooring.

Editor’s Note: “House of Contours blends organic design, functionality, arts, and creativity, creating a sensory abode amidst Mumbai’s urban sprawl. This house is a seamless continuum of earthy tones, soft contours, and thoughtfully spaced areas behind closed doors. Unique embellished features, curated textures, and customized furniture speak liveliness while catering to comfort.” ~ Anusha Sridhar

Organic Modern Interior Design in The House of Contours Embraces Softness | Design Hex

Entrance

The entry into the house is a refreshing break from the usual and is guided by a series of patterned and terracotta textured arches that frame the living room, which has its unique signature of two yucca trees, which is definitely the most picture-perfect view of this home.

As we walk through this passage of seven elaborate arches, we get the illusion of a ‘droste effect, created intentionally by constructing the arches from a height of 10 feet and gradually bringing this height down to about 8 feet as we progress to the next arch.

Living Room

This large-to-small effect creates a larger-than-life impact when one steps out of the smallest arch into a massive living room that was created by merging two additional rooms of the house into the original living space and creating a sweeping 55-foot-long and about 1350 sq. ft. large living room with a clear height of 10 feet.

Painstaking planning was put into creating a ceiling with the overall ducting of the air conditioners and fire sprinkler to be effective and yet not compromise on our ceiling heights.

We further tackled this by creating layers of different levels and curvy contours, which effectively hide these services artistically. Furthermore, it emulates the design theme of this home. Which we call the house of contours.

Staying true to the theme, Design Hex has created a bespoke contoured carpet that resembles an ocean of layers. In between, the flow abruptly interrupts as marble flooring suddenly appears, resembling islands in the ocean.

Using this, we have created the different zones in the large living space: a formal seating area, the cozy TV area, the area of the contoured bench under the Yucca trees, the twin swings zone, and a dining area complete with a fully functional pantry. The living space also houses a hidden limestone Mandir, created to mimic the original entry design of the house.

The eye greets so many hues of the same shades, layered and curved at every level it reaches, creating one of the most authentically unique experiences for the viewer.

The Master Bedroom

The brief for the master bedroom was of an airy, minimal yet artistic and organic space. We combined two bedrooms to create this expansive room complete with a large walk-in wardrobe, a separate AV, and a den.

The main challenge of the master bedroom involved artistically handling two large ducts positioned in the layout. To overcome this, we thoughtfully transformed them from eyesore blockages into creative partitions and art installations. Moreover, it seamlessly aids in the zoning of the space.

The duct separates the den area while showcasing the client’s tastefully collected pottery and books. Meanwhile, some niches remain open on both sides, offering a view of the bedroom area to highlight the connectivity and size of the space.

In the bed area, the layout intentionally cuts out to angle the bed toward the breathtaking views from the 51st floor. This positioning allows natural light to illuminate the curved bed back. Additionally, it accentuates the underplayed organic and monotone art, designed to spell the understated artistic luxury of the space.

Guest room

The guest room is the simplest mix of minimal elements of texture, white ash wood, and jute finishes. The clients’ love for the wabi-sabi inspires simplicity.

Parents room

The design of the parent’s room focuses on maintaining the original matte and organic aesthetic of the home. Meanwhile, it incorporates a hint of good old gloss and lux, as per their preference.

We combined a beautifully textured and acid-washed marble with a much-curated, textured, panelled wall in chequered patterns. Thus, creating a stark contrast.

The crystal pendants, the white marble bedside lights, and the luxury bed with brass inlays create a sense of understated luxury.

The Daughter’s room

The daughter’s room has all the elements to make it a perfect teenage girl room but we stayed clear of any obvious clichéd shades that one would expect. The colors feature muted off-whites, transitioning seamlessly into undertones of peaches.

The room is clear of clutter to allow original and gradual takeover of decor by the daughter. The yummy ‘macaroon bed’ takes center stage in this room. Additionally, it is flanked by the most ironic clay tree mural specially commissioned for the space. Meanwhile, another clay tree mural seamlessly takes over the arched window, which overlooks her walk-in wardrobe.

The daughter bathroom offers a soft pastel luxury experience, enhanced by a bold Michelangelo marble, the only one brought in.

Bathrooms

The bathrooms in the home all planned around the personality of their users. Additionally, the powder is clad in texture and shades of the same hues, like an ombré. The master bathroom is a wabi-sabi delight with its standout bespoke vanity unit. Kishangarh, Rajasthan, just for the sheer beauty of this lot of marble.

Balconies

This home is blessed with huge balconies attached throughout the entire length of the house, attached to every single room. Doing justice to these balconies was only inevitable considering the breathtaking view of the Mumbai city and the Arabian Sea throughout the house.

There are in all 9 balconies in the entire house, and each has a style of its own. The living room itself boasts 4 balconies complete with an outdoor dining area, bar ledges, and a fully functional bar area. Additionally, a contoured mini lounge pool; and a dedicated balcony for a barbecue.

Our intent for the design of the House of Contours was to leave one with a unique sensory experience mixed with the feel of connection to art, design, and function so tastefully blended together and wrapped up in organic formats and earthy finishes. Moreover, one feels like it is an original creation of the nature.
