Its people design the house as a reflection of themselves, shaping its spaces through patterns of use, memory, and daily life. The design avoids prescriptive planning, instead allowing flexibility layout and adaptability so the home can evolve with the family over time. The intent was to create an accommodative and non-restrictive environment, where spatial openness supports changing needs without compromising functionality.
Flexible Layout of this Pune Home Reflects Spatial Comfort | Studio Geru
Spatial planning forms the foundation of the project. Visual continuity between spaces establishes openness, while careful zoning allows moments of privacy where required. Circulation is intuitive and efficient, ensuring the house reads as a coherent whole rather than a collection of individual rooms. The layout prioritises clarity, ease of movement, and functional relationships between spaces.
Clay and sea inspire the material and colour palette, and the design expresses this influence through earthy tones and tactile surfaces. The designers use sandstone and terracotta as primary materials, applying them honestly and in keeping with their natural properties. They introduce wood as a consistent element to balance the palette and add warmth. They keep the finishes restrained, allowing material texture and construction logic to remain legible.
Indian textural references are integrated subtly within the architectural framework. Niches, printed tiles, and Indian textiles in upholstery add contextual depth without becoming decorative overlays. Materials such as micro-cement and mother-of-pearl are used selectively to introduce variation in surface and texture, contributing to a layered yet controlled interior language. Material choices were guided by durability, ageing, and long-term performance.
The private spaces shift into a cooler palette, with the bedrooms adopting soft blue tones inspired by the sea. This transition creates a clear spatial hierarchy, reinforcing the distinction between shared and private zones while maintaining continuity through material restraint.
A key element of the house is the raised platform within the living space. Finished in micro cement with a mother-of-pearl inlay, the surface depicts the client’s memory of petal fall—referred to as “sada/सडा “ in Marathi. The platform translates a personal narrative into an architectural surface, anchoring memory within the spatial composition of the house.
Functionally, the platform accommodates informal music jam sessions, becoming a gathering space that supports social interaction. The project ultimately positions the house not as a static object, but as a framework shaped by use, material, and time.
