  • Composition of Traditional Design Elements with Modern Design Sensibilities | P&S.Associates

Redesigning the modern design house that one has grown up in can be one of the toughest projects of ones designing career. The real challenge lies in retaining the emotions and yet bringing in the freshness. In this house the fear was not only saving the essence but also working around and modifying the age old load bearing structure and along with that the extension of a floor. This floor not only had a huge glass box sky light but the brief also included an elevator to be installed right in the middle of the house. Preserving the old and adding the new was a task but the amalgamation and the end result was much more than anticipated.

From the entrance garden and waterfall that replaced our old cricket pitch to the veranda marble that was retained as a memory all the details were worked out and not letting emotions crowd over the practicality and space usage. The open kitchen concept was introduced to this orthodox household moreover an element of exposed brick depicting our roots was added from the exteriors to a lot of interior spaces as well so that there would be a rhythm in the character of the house.

The balcony that replaced our age-old terrace night outs was supposed to be of great importance considering the many memories that it had witnessed and gladly it has done great justice to the past and the present structure. From cozy corners in the bedrooms, garden and balconies to the sky light right in the middle of the house and the open dining and kitchen concepts- all the ideas and spaces fit very well like a journey of a family over three generations. Hence the name Family Home befits this house more than any.

According to the usability and the members in the house decreasing the dressers and bathrooms were doubled up but with the help of a lot of metal columns and I sections. All the rooms have a reflection of the nature of the users but again creating a language of continuity throughout the house. All the passages and transition spaces have been designed in a way that they look the same so as to avoid the visual disturbances. A palette of kadappa on the floor and experimental patterns of brick on the walls makes it dramatic yet grounded and warm.

Moreover the second floor was designed as a den for hosting gatherings. We took utmost care to have a column less foot print of the entire house on that floor and keeping the brief in mind – a home theatre, a bar, a pantry, a poker table and a table tennis room/gym is created in a way that all the spaces pour into the other and yet maintaining a visual boundary
