  • A union of Victorian Interiors and Neoclassical Style | Vaastavya

    [Sassy_Social_Share]

Sophistication is at its peak in this residential apartment that shows its affluent style through Victorian interiors.

The apartment in question is huge: from one end to another, a sweeping patch of luxury via Victorian interiors. Hence the designers decided to delegate and work on the décor, much like you start from the dessert and work your way towards the main course?

Editor’s Note: The interiors of “Vaastavya” take one back to the opulent 19th-century era while grounding one to the present with modern amenities. Mesmerising Victorian chandeliers and bespoke furniture adorn the home, adding grace and panache. The floral wallpaper-backed walls on one side and the wooden jhula on the other signify a European essence to the Indian home. – Gopika Pramod

A union of Victorian Interiors and Neoclassical Style | Vaastavya

Says Nilay, “In any Michelin star restaurant, you will notice that the cuisine, décor, style, the aura of the chef…it all amounts to nothing if the taste is not phenomenal. This site is somewhat like that – the client is a deeply private person but intensely fond of style and there are wonderful soirees here with family and friends. Yes, the luxury and elegance have to be top class but the home has to be a home, after all! Besides, he travels often and therefore the home needed to have little pockets where you can sit and ponder on life and love!”

    Introduction

Beginning with the piece de resistance – the living room– the designers give a most select menu in terms of textures, colour, hues, nuances in the detailing and of course the master plan of the interior. Where to connect and where to intertwine spaces and furniture? What to make as customized pieces and how to sync it all so that it becomes seamlessly coherent? All this was done with breathtaking effort and attention to the smallest of things.

    Living room

This large wall on one side of the living room is the first thing one sees on entering the home. The panelling idea came after many other thoughts, and yet, it is very different from conventional oak style panelling. It is carefully planned to become a showpiece area, an irresistible and attention-grabbing frame. The circular wall pieces, the gold top, the designed console, the two vases on either side and the downlighters – all comes together in one picture perfect postcard image. The inlay work is planned to evoke old school charm of hallways where the sunlight shafts into the room and you walk silently along!

    Design elements

Colours, textures, shades, are all connected to the EQ of the home; a specific kind of onion pink for the wall paneling matches the couches at the far end; the sofa was carefully selected from a prominent brand. The architects love the gentleness of glass chandeliers and hence the one seen here is totally Victorian, with its little specks of light throwing delectable effects all over the room. If there was anything to draw attention to the large level of serenity, credit must be given to the full wall drapes that allow sunlight to come in.

Eyeballs also naturally go to the one large artwork hung on one wall- the only artwork, in fact, besides two small squarish plates on one wall next to the easy chairs. Bereft of a frame, the large painting resembles the work of old masters, (Monet, for one). It singlehandedly sums up the essence of this room: old school style in new sparkling avatar.

    Dining

The dining room is all about privacy and design composition. One wall is mirror panelled. The dining table, the console and the legs of the dining chairs are all carefully planned to be in sync, having similar brass plates as support. Surprisingly, the light above provided the starting point; its soft light and Victorian chandelier gives little patterns on the wallpaper and the entire effect is extremely serene.

    Master bedroom

Designed through curating a French style Parisian salon look, the bedroom is exquisitely designed; every piece of furniture was created by a master carpenter/craftsman.

    Daughter’s bedroom

A deeper shade of mauve/magenta rules here, with the bed taking CenterStage. Floral motifs against the panelling gives a glam look keeping the calmness intact.

A more modern look embracing art deco also; the zig zag pattern on the wall makes the room interesting from any angle. Interesting bedside tables give a pop effect simply because of their artsy design.

    Home theatre

A home theatre room that also has a low level seating for more informal easy-going ambience, along with a small bar unit that makes for easy entertaining.

    Upper floor family space

The use of micro topping lends this exposed concrete look with the vault ceiling. Existing furniture was used and refurbished. This is, unsurprisingly, one of the family’s most favourite places.

The cute door/shutters for the bookshelf add to the quaintness.

    Balcony

Looking out from the 14th floor is a lovely experience; correct use of warm wood furniture and soft lighting with one green wall – and this space becomes the goto spot at all times of day.

    Terrace

A gazebo on the terrace level serves up the last bit of value in the design. The easy chairs allow you to look out into a night alight with the lights of the city.
