Envisioning this 1400 sq ft home in Ahmedabad as a subtle blend of clean aesthetics and functionality required deliberate design gestures with a modern interpretation of craftsmanship, while accentuating certain elements through colors and textures. The idea of materiality as a unifying yet outlining feature of each space translated into warm materials like cane and wood seamlessly flowing into and out of the rooms.
A Subtle Blend Of Clean Aesthetics And Functionality | Compartment S4
Upon entering the light-filled apartment, the foyer smoothly transitions into a family room with hints of lavender geometric patterns connecting the two spaces.
In keeping with the functional and clean aesthetics, a sliding ensemble of teak and cane slowly reveals a formal living space behind it.
The indistinct living space converts into an extra bedroom with the sofa doubling up as a bed upon demand. This small gesture adds a requirement of 200 sq ft over and above the existing space.
Other than this partitioned space, the layout is kept as open as possible, with the family room opening towards the dining area, kitchen, and a balcony.
Embracing simplicity, functionality, and a deep appreciation for individuality, each bedroom boasts unique design elements where modern urban living meets timeless design principles.
The teak and cane material palette continues in the master bedroom, giving it a warm yet contemporary flair, adding a layer of texture and warmth.
In the daughter’s room, a subtle play of whimsy features hints of pale pink complementing earth tones of wood and the cool perforated metal sheet, creating a lively space. The platform bed at the foot of the window scales down the full-height wardrobes, creating a variation in scale in an otherwise blank room.
Custom-designed headboards with clean lines and uncluttered storage spaces allow the visual identity of each room to be cohesive yet exceptional.
The continuity and transitions of colors from one space to another and from one element to another, along with the profound restraint of the hand of the designer, allow the space to be revealed completely only upon careful observation.
Thus, the pastel palette of the tiles, laid out as a rug, is also reflected in the curated art pieces and the fabrics of the upholstery. This apartment breaks away from the usual ‘over-designed’ spaces and keeps things simple, a composition of elements in an oatmeal beige background.
