Located in Mumbai, this residence was designed for a close-knit, multi-generational family. The homeowners wanted the space to reflect their values, lifestyle, and individuality. During the initial discussions, they made one thing clear: they did not want their home to feel like a hotel. Instead, they envisioned a residence that felt warm, welcoming, and timeless. The design team translated this vision into a comfortable and thoughtfully considered home. Every space was designed to allow everyday life to unfold with ease and grace.
The design journey began with understanding not only the family’s aesthetic preferences but also their daily routines, aspirations, and practical requirements. One of the key considerations was ensuring seamless accessibility throughout the home. They integrated accessibility into the planning process right from the beginning.
Circulation pathways were carefully studied to ensure ease of movement. The design team thoughtfully planned furniture dimensions, seating heights, bed proportions, study areas, and transition spaces to support comfortable and barrier-free living. The objective was to create an environment that was intuitive and effortless to navigate while maintaining a sophisticated and cohesive visual language.
The spatial planning focuses on openness, connection, and functionality. Common spaces are designed to encourage interaction while still offering moments of privacy and retreat. The layout allows natural light to travel across the home, creating an atmosphere that feels bright, uplifting, and calm throughout the day.
Materiality played a significant role in shaping the character of the residence. The design team selected warm wood finishes, soft textiles, natural stone, textured surfaces, and subtle metallic accents to create a sense of understated luxury. Rather than relying on overt ornamentation, the project celebrates craftsmanship, texture, proportion, and detail.
The living and dining areas serve as the social heart of the home. Architectural arches, textured surfaces, warm finishes, and carefully curated furniture create a setting that encourages togetherness while maintaining a sense of quiet luxury. The material palette remains calm and restrained, allowing the textures and detailing to take centre stage.
Burma teak elements introduce warmth and richness, while carefully selected laminates provide durability and practicality for everyday living. Textured ceiling finishes, moulding details, soft furnishings, and layered materials add depth and visual interest without overwhelming the spaces.
The design integrates a prayer alcove into the common living space as one of the project’s most meaningful elements. Faith plays an important role in the family’s life, so the designers wove spirituality naturally into the home rather than isolating it within a separate room. Designed as a subtle focal point, the prayer space reflects both reverence and belonging, becoming anemotional anchor within the residence.
The daughter’s bedroom introduces a softer and more playful expression through gentle pastel tones, whimsical artwork, custom furniture, and carefully layered textures. The room balances imagination with functionality, creating a nurturing environment that can evolve with time.
The master suite adopts a calmer and more restrained language. Soft neutrals, tactile materials, warm lighting, and bespoke furniture create a sanctuary-like atmosphere that promotes rest and relaxation. Every element has been carefully considered to support comfort without compromising on elegance.
Custom-designed furniture forms an integral part of the project. From beds and wardrobes to study units, storage systems, and display elements, each piece was tailored specifically for the family’s needs. This bespoke approach allowed the interiors to feel highly personal while ensuring optimal functionality.
The designers also paid particular attention to the finer details that define how people experience a space. Decorative screens, textured finishes, curated accessories, custom cabinetry, handcrafted accents, and thoughtful lighting layers contribute to the overall character of the home. Together, these elements create an authentic and warm atmosphere that standardised solutions cannot achieve.
Throughout the design process, the goal was never to create a showpiece. Instead, the ambition was to create a home that would continue to feel relevant, comfortable, and meaningful for years to come.
The Chandy Residence ultimately reflects a design philosophy that prioritises people over trends. The family shaped the home around everyday rituals, family connections, accessibility, and emotional resonance. While contemporary in its expression, it remains deeply rooted in the idea of home as a place of comfort, belonging, and memory.
The result is a residence that feels timeless rather than fashionable, elegant rather than extravagant, and above all, genuinely personal—a home designed not for display, but for living.
