Located in a dense suburb of Bengaluru, the brewpub is envisioned as an organic pavilion immersed in the outdoors. Its garden-like character recalls the city’s older neighbourhoods. Designed for community, the layout centres on a diagonal water court. This divides the rectangular site into front and rear pavilions connected by a bridge.
Surrounding spaces align themselves to this geometry, negotiating between the shifted axes and circulation paths. As visitors move through the building, the changing alignment creates moments of conceal and reveal; building curiosity.
A Diagonal Water Court Organizes This Garden-Inspired Bengaluru Brewpub | Space Redefined
From the outset, the front pavilion appears as a series of rusty-red terraces interspersed with landscape. Entry is through a shaded loggia- where the structural concrete, brew tanks and water garden- layer up into a singular expansive view. The front-desk by the waiting offers glimpses of the private- woody dining behind.
At the turning, an arched portal reveals a sculptural waterfall set against the opening into the court. The path narrows into a corridor before opening out onto the stepping stones that cross the pool below. At once- the sweeping water body, island bar and the surrounding terraces- come into view. Arcades at ground level and stepped balconies above overlook the water plaza; with a sneak-peak of the pitched roof in the backdrop.
As one moves further along the arcade, views unfold gradually before expanding into a broad panorama of the glass gantry suspended above the raked bar ahead. The building seems to diverge here into multiple directions. One leads up stairs to the terrace dining above. Another continues toward the open dining along the water-plaza- to the left; to the right- a semi-private dining behind the bar. And straight ahead along the bar, the shaded indoor dining extends deeper into the rear pavilion.
Inside- the atmosphere shifts again. In a play of shadow washed terracotta surfaces against the liminal views toward the live kitchen- gives way to an inner atrium court. Drenched in daylight, the breezy light-well grounds and animates the dining areas- across levels, to the tune of the skies above. Creepers spill from balconies overhead; while a large screening wall anchors the activity around the kitchen and gathering spaces below.
Upstairs the route continues further toward an expansive water-dining area overlooking the plaza below and the bar beyond. Throughout the building, the ambiguity between what is outside and in, what is a distant vista and immediate- creates a serene composition where the viewer, architecture and gardenesque setting seem to be part of a larger environment.
The building- although substantial in scale, owing to its sheer span and construction- its experience is shaped by smaller details. The spaces are grounded by a restrained palette of raw and earthy materials. Granite, concrete, terracotta and wood seamlessly meld into the backdrop, allowing people and activity to become primary to the experience throughout.
