What makes you feel at home? The sheer simplicity and warmth of the ambiance? The ease of flow between the spaces? The softness of sunlight filtering through the transparent surfaces? This house tickmarks all and represents the feeling of extreme comfort, tenderness and serenity. – Nishal Sevak(Co-Editor)
Upon entrance, you walk through a small garden and move on to the open living and dining, which is the heart of the house. As you arrive here, you see that you are flanked by an internal courtyard on the side and a small urban garden on the left.
The internal courtyard partners up with the main stair as it culminates into a crown, letting in dappled light and fresh air. Consequently, the center of the first floor where there is a balcony, lets in the urban garden and permeates light into the bedroom.
The designers create massing of the building in such a way that gradually steps up from the roadside. Talking about the first floor, the daughter’s bedroom steps out into a large open terrace overlooking the street on the north side, whereas, the other bedroom overlooks the entry garden, where there is a wooden operable screen the highlighting element that acts as a playful substitute for a curtain for the first-floor façade.
The lady of the house hails from Punjab, therefor, the triangular motifs seen through different elements of the house are a subtle reference to the beautiful Punjabi folk embroidery known as phulkari, which she wears with great pride!
