Prompt Castle is a contemporary mixed-use building located in Pallikaranai, Chennai, designed to accommodate office spaces and residential apartments within a single, coherent architectural framework. Set within a rapidly developing residential–commercial neighbourhood, the project responds to its context through careful planning, climate-sensitive strategies, and a façade that balances performance with identity.
A Contemporary Mixed-Use Building Accommodates Offices & Homes | Scult Design Lab
The organisation of the building follows a clear vertical zoning approach. The design dedicates a stilt level to parking and essential services, allowing the ground plane to remain efficient and uncluttered. Above this, the plan allocates the lower two floors to office spaces, designed to support flexible work environments.
The design arranges open-plan work areas along the building’s surrounding in order to take advantage of natural light and air. Thus, placement of closed spaces such as meeting rooms, conference areas, and management offices maintains privacy without interrupting the overall spatial flow. A centrally located circulation core ensures clear movement and efficient access across all floors.
The residential floors occupy the upper levels of the building, offering a quieter and more private living environment away from street activity. Each apartment is planned with a clear distinction between public and private zones. Living and dining spaces are placed along the façade, opening out to balconies that allow daylight, air movement, and views into the interiors. Bedrooms and service areas are positioned deeper within the plan to ensure privacy and acoustic comfort. These balconies and sit-out spaces also act as thermal buffers, enhancing indoor comfort while extending the living areas outward.
A key design element of Prompt Castle is its climate-responsive façade. Designed specifically for Chennai’s hot and humid conditions, the façade acts as a protective layer that moderates heat and light. Vertical louvres form the dominant visual feature, filtering direct sunlight, reducing glare, and creating shaded surfaces throughout the day.
Beyond their environmental role, the louvres lend depth and rhythm to the elevation, giving the building a bold and identifiable character. Carefully calibrated glazing complements this system, ensuring interiors remain bright and well-ventilated without excessive heat gain.
Horizontal slab edges and projecting balconies help articulate the building’s mass, breaking down its scale and establishing a balanced composition of solid and void. At the terrace level, pergola structures provide additional shading and create usable semi-open spaces, reinforcing the building’s passive design approach.
The design team intentionally restrains the material palette, focusing on durability, low maintenance, and contextual relevance. Neutral tones and textured finishes allow the architecture to remain grounded within its urban surroundings while aging gracefully over time. Structurally, a consistent grid and service alignment ensure smooth integration of office and residential functions, supporting both design clarity and construction efficiency.
Prompt Castle demonstrates how thoughtful spatial planning and climate-responsive design can shape a balanced mixed-use building. By prioritising comfort, functionality, and environmental performance, the project creates a seamless coexistence between work and living spaces, contributing meaningfully to Pallikaranai’s evolving urban landscape.
