“Hut House” : A Residence, Naturally Illuminated With Elegant and Modern Look | Mohit Jain and Architects
Visit : Mohit Jain and Architects
The west-facing plot is 20’x 70′ deep and is enclosed by buildings on three sides with no setbacks, with the narrower 20’ face opening towards a 25′ wide road of a busy market. The team took on the challenge of creating an airy, day-lit space that would remain naturally illuminated, with all rooms cross-ventilated throughout the day despite the restrictive site conditions.
The elevation of this narrow house is uniquely designed to highlight the Hut shaped RCC balcony on the second floor which brings us to name this house as “HUT HOUSE”. We have also used WPC rafters to create grill in the balcony, which helps to create privacy and security.
The residence on the first floor has a access from a straight flight staircase which starts at the front of the plot at ground floor and brings you to the central part of the plot when you climb up. A huge 10′ ht door opens up in foyer space connecting to the double height living room creates a sense of surprise. Next to the living room is a kitchen in south east and pooja area in north east corner as per vastu.
There was also the desire to create a strong visual connection between the different levels to facilitate a sense of connected living for the family units. This became the starting point for the design exercise that evolved into a series of vertically stacked volumes– the two-storey home is expressed as duplexes around living room, allowing light and ventilation deep into the house.
First floor houses dining, kitchen, mother’s room and a master bedrooms. Accommodating all this spaces in just 1400 sq.ft floor plate was a task since all three sides of the plot were blocked. The mothers’ room is small so we decided to give a full height mirror behind the bed which doubles up the space visually; also using white wardrobe with a veneer on the shelves makes the space look very elegant and modern.
The west front comprises the master bedroom with a balcony opening towards main road. UPVC sliding doors with DGU glass is used to reduce the noise from the main road. Second floor accommodates a small terrace garden, kids room, a informal seating and another master bedroom.
Kids room on the second floor is designed to inspire and create positive vibes. The back drop of bed has inspirational words leaser cut on the MDF with deco. A elegant study area is also attached in the kids room along with a wardrobe which gives ample storage space to the Kids. Every space of the house is well thought of to utilize every inch of the small plot given to the team.
