Fabric couches are generally cheaper to purchase than leather versions. But, having a fabric couch isn’t just a money-saving tactic. Fabric is warming to touch, making it more inviting to sit on and snuggle. It’s also available in a wider range of colors and patterns, ensuring you find the perfect solution for your home.
Of course, there is an issue when it comes to spills and daily wear. Leather couches are designed to be cleaned with specialist leather products. In contrast, fabric couches can quickly start to show the dirt associated with everyday usage.
The good news is that there are some great options when it comes to couch cleaning. You may feel that you can handle this yourself. However, the professionals have the skills, knowledge, and equipment to do a fantastic job. It’s worth giving them a try.
If you want to clean a fabric couch yourself then you’ll need to use the following instructions. But even if you clean the couch yourself, it’s still a good idea to use a professional sofa cleaning service at least once a year.
Vacuum First
The first step in couch cleaning is to remove loose debris. That means vacuuming the entire couch thoroughly. You’ll need to pay attention to all the crevices and should remove the cushions to ensure the entire couch is thoroughly vacuumed. In most cases, it’s a useful idea to use a cylinder vacuum with a motorised tool, as these are highly effective on couches.
Damp Sponge
Before you start this stage it’s a very good idea to take a look at the label on the couch. The covers may be able to be removed and washed. If this is the case you can do so but should follow the instructions carefully. You don’t want to shrink the covers!
Even if you can remove the covers, you’ll still have to deal with the rest of the couch.
The best idea is to get a bowl of water and add three tablespoons of white vinegar and one tablespoon of dish soap. You can then use a clean cloth to dab your couch. It’s important not to get it too wet. Soaking your couch won’t get more dirt out but it will take longer to dry and increase the risk of water stains.
You’ll need to carefully go over the whole couch and then dab it again with a dry cloth. This should lift any stains and leave the couch looking like new.
It is important not to use blow dryers, they are more likely to damage the couch. It must be left to dry naturally.
Dealing With Stains
White vinegar and dish soap are usually very good at removing dirt. But, if you find you have a stubborn stain there are several other things you can try.
Baking soda mixed with a tiny bit of water makes a paste that can be very effective against any stain. Gently rub it into the stain in a circular motion and leave for fifteen minutes. You should then be able to vacuum it off. Baking soda is particularly effective at absorbing grease.
It is worth checking what specialist products are available for your couch. There will be different products depending on exactly what material your couch is made from. If nothing else is working, they are worth trying.
