The Folds is a single-storey corporate headquarters designed to accommodate three real estate entities—Polaris, Banyan, and Sunwoods. Organized around a central courtyard, the project establishes a clear spatial hierarchy where the courtyard functions as the heart of the building. The reception opens directly into this central space, from which circulation extends towards the staff work areas and the directors’ zone. Corridors running along three sides of the courtyard connect the director cabins, VIP lounge, and administrative spaces, ensuring visual and spatial continuity throughout the complex.

The project’s defining concept is inspired by the language of paper folding. Drawing from the principles of origami, the design explores the transformation of a simple surface into a sculptural architectural form. Rather than replicating traditional origami patterns, the building interprets irregular folds and fragmented planes that appear spontaneous, as if a sheet of paper has been twisted and folded into a dynamic composition. This abstraction becomes the primary architectural expression of the project.
The facade is conceived as a series of angular, multi-faceted triangular planes that wrap the building like a second skin. These folded surfaces are not merely decorative elements but an integral part of the building envelope, responding to the internal organization while establishing a strong visual identity. The geometry creates a constantly changing interplay of light and shadow, allowing the facade to transform throughout the day. Sunlight striking the angular surfaces produces varying depths of shadow and highlight, bringing movement and visual richness to the architecture.
To reinforce the conceptual connection with paper, the entire facade is clad in Indian white marble. Its pale tone recalls the blank sheet from which every folded form originates, while its fine-grained texture and subtle crystalline particles interact with natural light to accentuate the depth and complexity of the folded surfaces. The material’s reflective qualities enhance the perception of geometry, creating a delicate relationship between texture, light, and form.
The language of folding subtly extends into the interior spaces and landscape. While the exterior presents a sculptural expression, the interiors adopt a restrained and honest material palette. Exposed RCC slabs reveal the structural framework of the building, complemented by custom-designed furniture crafted from wood and metal, alongside grey veneers and neutral finishes. This combination creates a work environment that balances material warmth with simplicity, fostering a calm and grounded atmosphere.
At the center of the project, the courtyard serves as both a spatial anchor and an experiential focal point. Four sculptural feature walls positioned within the courtyard form a conceptual installation visible from the surrounding corridors. Clad in Indian natural grey stone and articulated with projections in contrasting Indian black stone, these walls celebrate the expressive qualities of material, shadow, and relief.
Each wall represents one of architecture’s fundamental elements—walls, openings, columns, and stairs. Rather than depicting these components literally, the design abstracts them through a series of carefully positioned stone projections emerging from the surface. As sunlight strikes these projections, the resulting shadows transform the flat walls into perceptible three-dimensional compositions. The evolving sciography creates dynamic visual effects that shift throughout the day, continuously altering the perception of the installations.
Together, these feature walls distill architecture into its essential elements, transforming the courtyard into a place where form, material, and light become tools of interpretation. The courtyard thus becomes more than an organizing space; it functions as a living gallery that celebrates the fundamental language of architecture.
Ultimately, The Folds is an exploration of geometry, materiality, and light. By translating the ephemeral qualities of folded paper into stone, the project transforms a simple conceptual gesture into a distinctive architectural identity. The result is a workplace that is both sculptural and functional, where architecture is experienced as a continuously evolving dialogue between surface, shadow, material, and space.

Editor’s Note: Some places feel rooted because they belong to their surroundings rather than trying to stand apart from them. Coffee Sangam in Andhra Pradesh takes this approach through a raw, tactile palette of brick, stone, teak, and mild steel. The random rubble compound wall extends the landscape into the architecture, while the Corten steel […]

A Mock-up That Became a Home – For an architecture practice, a mock-up often helps test an idea before the team translates it into a larger project. It allows architects to work at full scale, examine materials and construction techniques, and understand their limitations. The process also gives them room to test different brick bonds and […]
