Located on Nepean Sea Road in South Mumbai, The Linear Edit is a 1,500 sq. ft. residence by Aashni Zaveri Designs. Conceived as an exploration of clean lines, softened geometry and layered materiality, the home brings together architectural precision and understated warmth.
The design moves away from excessive ornamentation, allowing proportion, texture and craftsmanship to shape its identity. A restrained material palette establishes visual calm, while bespoke furniture, sculptural lighting and resolved details introduce depth and individuality.
At its core, the residence reflects a belief that contemporary interiors need not feel austere. Carefully composed spaces, tactile surfaces and subtle geometric shifts create a refined, welcoming environment that supports everyday living..
A South Mumbai Home Where Geometry Does The Talking, The Linear Edit | Aashni Zaveri Designs
Continuity guides the architectural narrative. Linear compositions, integrated joinery and uninterrupted surfaces create a cohesive design vocabulary that extends throughout the residence. Rounded profiles, sculptural furniture and softer materials balance the structured elements, introducing movement while maintaining visual clarity.
The interiors connect each room into a cohesive experience rather than treating every space as a separate design statement. Material transitions, furniture proportions and lighting contribute to a consistent rhythm, allowing the home to unfold from one space to another.
Natural light further strengthens this relationship. As daylight moves across surfaces, it reveals the variations in texture and finish, giving the restrained palette a changing visual character.
The result is an interior where simplicity is not an absence of detail, but an outcome of deliberate design decisions.
The living and dining areas form the central social spaces of the residence. Instead of separating them through rigid architectural boundaries, the design establishes visual connections that encourage openness and fluid movement.
The living space brings together sculptural furniture, tailored upholstery and tactile finishes to create an atmosphere that feels both composed and comfortable. Clean architectural lines provide structure, while softer furniture silhouettes introduce a sense of ease.
Bespoke elements play an important role in defining the interior. The furniture complements the surrounding architecture through careful consideration of scale, form and material compatibility. This approach allows pieces to contribute to the composition rather than compete for attention.
The dining area extends the same visual language while maintaining its own identity. Sculptural lighting lends character to the setting, becoming an expressive element within the restrained framework.
Together, these spaces demonstrate how subtle variations in form, texture and proportion can establish distinct experiences without compromising visual continuity.
The kitchen continues the residence’s linear architectural vocabulary through streamlined cabinetry, uninterrupted surfaces and integrated storage.
The layout prioritises functionality while keeping practical elements discreet and the interiors free from visual clutter. The cabinetry and material junctions reinforce the sense of order, establishing a space where utility and aesthetics coexist.
Consistent detailing and a shared material palette connect the kitchen with its surrounding spaces.
Expansive glazing brings natural light into the space while framing views of the Mumbai skyline. This connection to the city introduces a visual backdrop, allowing the kitchen to feel connected to its urban setting.
The bedrooms reinterpret the home’s architectural language through a softer, more intimate lens. While maintaining design continuity, these spaces prioritise comfort, warmth and a sense of retreat.
Botanical wallcoverings introduce organic pattern, creating a contrast against the clean-lined joinery and composed furniture arrangements. Layered upholstery and tactile finishes add depth without overwhelming the visual balance.
Integrated storage forms a part of the bedroom design. The design integrates storage into the architectural framework, maintaining clarity and openness without making it feel like a separate addition.
Softly profiled joinery introduces curves that temper the more structured elements, creating an environment that feels restful yet considered.
The emphasis remains on achieving a balance between aesthetic refinement and the practical needs of everyday life. Each bedroom retains its individual character while remaining connected to the design narrative.
The bathrooms present an interpretation of the home’s restrained material palette, introducing veined stone, sculptural fittings and carefully detailed surfaces.
Here, patterns become an integral part of the architectural expression. The movement within the stone contrasts with the controlled geometry of fittings and joinery, creating visual interest through material relationships rather than added ornamentation.
The design carefully considers how surfaces meet, the proportions of each element and the clarity of the overall composition.
These spaces demonstrate how thoughtful material selection and precis
A key aspect of The Linear Edit is its design and execution process. Although the residence is located in South Mumbai, Aashni Zaveri managed its design development and coordination from Antwerp, Belgium.
This required a structured approach to remote project management. Aashni coordinated technical drawing reviews, material approvals, bespoke furniture detailing and site execution with the teams in Mumbai.
Three planned visits to the city coincided with key stages of civil work, execution and final detailing. These visits provided opportunities to assess progress, resolve site-specific conditions and refine design decisions in person.
The process placed importance on detailed documentation, clarity of communication and coordination. Maintaining consistency across architectural elements, furniture and material finishes required every decision to remain closely aligned with the original design intent.
This cross-continental approach became an integral part of the project’s story, demonstrating the importance of a well-defined architectural vision and collaborative execution.
The Linear Edit brings together European-influenced design sensibilities and the practical requirements of contemporary Mumbai living.
Its character emerges through measured contrasts: structured lines against softened forms, restrained finishes against tactile materials, and architectural precision against the familiarity of domestic life.
Rather than relying on a singular statement, the residence finds expression through the cumulative effect of considered details.
For Aashni Zaveri Designs, the project reflects an approach where proportion, materiality and craftsmanship guide every design decision, creating interiors that are cohesive without becoming repetitive.
The Linear Edit prioritises balance over extravagance, bringing architecture, furniture and materials together to create a harmonious home.
