  • Sea Facing Interiors Bring Timeless Elegance Into The Renaissance Apartment | Fine Lines Designers

Located in South Mumbai, The Renaissance Home is a 1,650 sq. ft. apartment with three bedrooms. The design brings together European classicism and contemporary living. With uninterrupted sea views from every room, the apartment already has a strong connection to its surroundings. The interiors complement these views rather than compete with them. European details, layered finishes and elegant furnishings give the home a distinct character while maintaining a sense of openness.

    The Renaissance

The brief was to create a sophisticated, timeless home that remained practical for everyday living. The interiors reflect the grandeur and intricate detailing of European classical design. Clean lines, practical features and a muted palette bring a modern touch. Instead of following a purely classical style, the design uses traditional references selectively. These sit comfortably alongside contemporary furniture, finishes and artworks.

    The Renaissance

The living and dining areas establish this language immediately. The walls throughout these spaces are panelled in light-toned veneer, detailed with mouldings that introduce a subtle classical rhythm. The panelling conceals ample storage, keeping the spaces visually uncluttered. It also meets the practical needs of a contemporary home. This balance of ornamentation and utility guides the design throughout the apartment. Every detail serves a purpose while supporting the family’s everyday needs.

    The Renaissance

The balcony is perhaps the most distinctive expression of the European influence. Customised wallpaper featuring European figures transforms the balcony into an intimate, theatrical setting. It gives the space a distinct character beyond its conventional use as an outdoor extension. In the living room, a mirrored wall above the sofa reflects the wallpaper. This reflection creates a sense of depth and visually expands the space. It also makes the European imagery appear to extend into the adjoining room.

The selection of art and objects was approached with equal care. Bronze and marble artefacts were sourced from antique dealers in Chor Bazaar. Select pieces were also purchased from Hutardo. Antique paintings and mirrors reinforce the classical character of the living spaces. Their careful selection keeps the interiors from feeling overly formal. Each object adds character to the home. Together, these details create a layered interior rather than a uniform aesthetic.

Colour plays a restrained but important role. Each object adds character to the home. Together, these details create a layered interior. The carefully chosen pieces complement one another. They also preserve the individuality of each space. This approach keeps the interiors from feeling uniform. Instead, the home reveals its personality through thoughtful details.

    The Renaissance

The bedrooms take a distinctly more contemporary direction. While the living and dining areas draw heavily from European classicism, the private spaces are modern, understated and individualised. PU-finished wardrobes and leather detailing establish a cleaner aesthetic, while each bedroom incorporates a distinctive feature or object that gives it its own identity.

    The Renaissance

In the master bedroom and bathroom, for instance, the emphasis is on creating a moment of pause. A comfortable recliner with a footstool from BoConcept is positioned beside the window, turning the sea-facing corner into a personal retreat.

It offers the client an inviting place to sit with a cup of coffee and take in the view, demonstrating how the design prioritises experience as much as aesthetics.

The son’s bedroom takes an altogether different approach. A Medusa head, sourced from Maison Sia at Raghuvanshi Mills, sits prominently on a pedestal, becoming an almost sculptural focal point.

Above the headboard, an animated 3D modern wall-art print by Baiju Parthan adds another layer of visual intrigue. Its contemporary quality contrasts with the more classical references elsewhere in the home and becomes an unexpected conversation piece.

The daughter’s room introduces a more expressive material and colour palette. The wall behind the bed is clad in an unusual marble, creating a dramatic natural texture and becoming the visual anchor of the room. A Karl Lagerfeld artefact, sourced from

The Designera, adds a fashion-led touch to the space, while a customised red study table introduces a vivid burst of colour. These details give the room a youthful personality while maintaining the sophistication that runs through the rest of the apartment.

What ultimately brings the apartment together is the freedom given to the design firm by the client. Rather than imposing rigid specifications or predetermined choices, the client allowed the designers considerable freedom to experiment with materials, furniture, art and artefacts. This made it possible to approach the residence almost as a curated collection, where each element was selected for its ability to contribute to the larger story.

The Renaissance Home is therefore not an exercise in reproducing European classicism, nor is it a strictly contemporary residence. Instead, it occupies the space between the two. Classical mouldings meet modern finishes; antique paintings sit alongside contemporary art; richly sourced artefacts share space with customised furniture; and carefully introduced colour punctuates a predominantly neutral palette.
