  • A Mountain Facing Duplex Connects Forest Views With Urban Horizons | Finesse Interior Design Studio

Some homes are designed around a view. House Between Horizons brings three into the heart of the home.

Located in Siliguri, West Bengal, this 4,700 sq. ft. residential duplex by Finesse Interior Design Studio draws from its surroundings. The residence overlooks the forest to the east, the mountains to the north and the city skyline to the south. The design places these views at the heart of the home. They shape how the spaces connect and how the family experiences the surrounding landscape.

    Comfortable Modern Luxury

Completed in November 2025, the project explores a quieter interpretation of luxury—one rooted in proportion, materiality, natural light and comfort rather than excess. From the outset, the intention was to create a home that could accommodate the scale and sophistication expected of a contemporary luxury residence while retaining the familiarity and warmth of a lived-in family home. The design language consequently developed around a restrained palette of warm neutrals, natural timber, tactile fabrics and carefully selected classical references.

The aesthetic draws from a contemporary interpretation of English countryside living. Its
influence is not literal or nostalgic. Instead, it appears in the qualities of the spaces—the emphasis on comfort, tailored furniture, natural materials, traditional silhouettes, timber detailing and a sense of permanence. These elements take on a contemporary character through cleaner lines and more modern spatial forms.

At the heart of the duplex is a generous double-height living space. The volume provides the residence with its strongest architectural gesture, but the interiors were deliberately designedn to temper that grandeur. A large upholstered sofa, accent chairs, timber coffee tables and a softly patterned rug establish a comfortable human scale within the expansive room.

    Statement Staircase Details

Above, a statement chandelier occupies the vertical volume, creating a visual focal point without relying on excessive decoration. The staircase, with its dark metal detailing and timber treads, becomes another architectural element within the room, creating strong contrast against the softer neutral envelope. This balance between scale and intimacy became an important consideration throughout the project.

A large residence can easily become a collection of individually decorated rooms. Our approach was instead to establish a continuous visual language and allow each space to develop its own character within it. Warm timber, cream and taupe tones, dark accents and tactile fabrics recur throughout the home, but their proportions and applications change according to the function of each space.

The living areas demonstrate this principle particularly clearly. The palette remains quiet, allowing the architecture and views to provide much of the drama. The furniture encourages conversation rather than simply facing the architecture. Rugs define the seating areas within the larger open space.

    Timber Dining Space

The dining space continues the same language with darker timber furniture and cane detailing. Its relationship with the kitchen creates a natural transition between formal dining and everyday family life. Here, the traditional character of the furniture sits comfortably alongside a more contemporary kitchen environment, creating a dialogue between old and new.
Throughout the residence, natural light becomes an integral part of the design.

Large windows and glazed openings allow daylight to move deep into the interiors. Sheer curtains soften the intensity of the light while maintaining a connection with the outdoors, and heavier curtains introduce another layer of privacy and control.

This is particularly evident in the bedrooms, where the palette becomes softer and moren intimate. Warm timber flooring, neutral upholstery, layered bedding and upholstered seating create restful environments without introducing unnecessary visual noise.

    Classic Bedroom Details

One of the bedrooms introduces a dark timber four-poster bed, providing a stronger architectural gesture within the otherwise understated palette. Its traditional character subtly reinforces the English countryside influence while the surrounding furniture, lighting and finishes keep the composition contemporary. Material selection played an equally important role in establishing the atmosphere of the residence.

Wooden flooring by Lamiwood brings warmth and continuity through the spaces, while Statuario marble from Atlantic Marble, Kolkata, introduces a refined natural stone element. Tiles from Nexion and Simpolo add to the home’s material palette. Opus paints and finishes, along with Asian Paints texture finishes, create a softer backdrop for the furnishings and architectural elements.

    Layered Textile Details

The textiles add depth and softness to the restrained colour scheme. Rugs from Saraswati Rugs, Jaipur, ground the seating areas, while soft furnishings from D’Decor, Asian Paints and Sabyasachi, together with upholstery and cushions from Warwick, introduce variation through texture and subtle pattern.

Lighting was approached as a layered design element rather than simply a functional requirement. Decorative lighting and chandeliers from Delhi Brass provide moments of ornament and craftsmanship, while Hybec ceiling lights support the architectural illumination.

    Integrated Home Essentials

The same attention was given to functional components. GROHE fittings, Schneider Electric switches, Mitsubishi Electric air conditioning and Fanzart fans were integrated into the interiors without allowing technical requirements to interrupt the overall design language.

One of the most significant challenges during the project was achieving visual continuity across the large duplex. For us as designers, the challenge was not simply to make each room attractive. It was to ensure that the entire residence felt like one home. This required careful editing of materials, furniture proportions, colours and decorative elements.

The scale of the double-height areas also required particular attention. Too much decoration would have competed with the architecture, while too little could have made the spaces feel cold. We therefore worked through layers—timber, upholstery, rugs, curtains, lighting and carefully selected objects—to create warmth without clutter.

    Quiet Design Restraint

The views presented another important design consideration. With such a strong natural setting, the interiors needed to know when to step back. Instead of introducing visual competition, the palette was deliberately softened and the openings were allowed to do the work.

In many ways, this became an exercise in restraint. The design was not about adding more; it was about identifying what each space genuinely needed and allowing those elements to have room to breathe. This philosophy extends to the understanding of luxury within the project. At House Between Horizons, luxury is not expressed through an accumulation of finishes or decorative objects.

    Living With Nature

It is found in the quality of the experience—the way a room receives morning light, the comfort of a well-proportioned sofa, then warmth of timber beneath one’s feet, the quietness of a bedroom, or the way a distant mountain view becomes part of an everyday living room. The residence ultimately becomes a meeting point between architecture and landscape, contemporary living and timeless references, openness and intimacy. Its three horizons provide the larger narrative, while the interiors create the framework through which those horizons are experienced.

The forest, mountains and city are constantly changing, but the home remains grounded in a palette and material language designed to endure. For Finesse Interior Design Studio, that is what makes House Between Horizons meaningful: it is not a home that attempts to overpower its setting, but one that allows its setting to become part of the architecture of everyday life. Three horizons surround the home. The interiors bring them together.
