  • An Industrial Factory Reconsiders Expansion Through Flexible Spatial Organisation | Compartment S4

Industrial buildings often function as fixed structures. They prioritise efficiency, economy, and immediate production needs. When businesses grow, they often expand through attached sheds, added mezzanines, and rerouted services. These changes can also compromise circulation. Compartment S4 challenges this conventional approach by treating growth as an architectural premise rather than a future problem.

    Expandable Factory Framework

Part of the same industrial campus as Monokuro, the 1,500 sq. m. factory responds to rapidly evolving manufacturing requirements through an expandable architectural framework. Instead of constructing a complete building at once, the project establishes a permanent envelope capable of accommodating multiple phases of occupation.

Additional manufacturing floors can be introduced over time, allowing the building to grow while maintaining its architectural coherence and operational efficiency. At the heart of this strategy is a reinforced concrete core that consolidates circulation and services into a permanent structural spine. Lightweight steel floors can be inserted as additional space is required, transforming expansion into an act of addition rather than alteration. Future growth can therefore occur without disrupting existing operations or fundamentally changing the building’s infrastructure.

    Circular Industrial Form

The architectural language emerges directly from this adaptable system. A cylindrical volume challenges the rigid orthogonal geometry commonly associated with industrial buildings. Rather than functioning as an aesthetic gesture, the circular form creates usable residual spaces for storage, landscape, and circulation while establishing a softer relationship with the site.

Environmental performance is integrated into the architecture. An inverted pitched roof collects rainwater through a central channel while creating generous internal volumes. Skylights within the concrete core bring filtered daylight deep into the factory and act as thermal exhausts, enabling stack ventilation. Ribbon windows around the envelope provide continuous cross-ventilation. Their fixed and operable glazing, combined with wired translucent glass, diffuses daylight and creates a softer atmosphere within the production spaces.

    Material and Landscape

Material choices reinforce the building’s utilitarian character. Galvanized corrugated steel enables lightweight future expansion, while exposed reinforced concrete expresses permanence. IPS flooring, unfinished surfaces, black metal, and stone-chip plaster establish a restrained monochromatic palette in which texture, light, and geometry become the primary architectural expressions. Landscape follows the same principle of purposeful restraint. Existing mature trees are retained, while curved residual spaces become planted courts. Continuous planters accompany the ribbon windows, and denser planting to the south and west provides solar protection.

Ultimately, the project is not simply an unconventional factory but a framework for continuous transformation. Its geometry, structure, environmental systems, materials, and landscape originate from a single question: how can an industrial building remain complete while continuously evolving? Compartment S4 answers by making adaptability the defining characteristic of the architecture.
