  • Quiet Drama: A Timeless Four-BHK Home Shaped by Detail in Kolkata | AB Design

The Elysian Haven is a 2,100-square-foot four-BHK apartment in Kolkata, designed by Aanchhal Bhuwalka of AB Designs. The home serves a multi-generational family. Aanchhal Bhuwalka completed the residence in September 2023, creating a timeless backdrop that reflects the personalities of each family member. The design balances understated elegance with expressive details while maintaining visual cohesion across every room. The result is a home that brings together individual character and a unified design language.

    Kolkata

    Kolkata in Balance

At the heart of this Kolkata project lies a delicate equilibrium: minimalist restraint with maximalist impact. The home embraces muted tones, sinuous and geometric mouldings, and brass accents across furniture, lighting, and joinery. Rather than overwhelming the senses, the designers use each intricate element with intention. These details create moments of discovery within an otherwise calm, monochromatic shell. At the entrance, fluted glass partitions softly separate the kitchen and mandir. The double-height living and dining space centres around a dark marble floor that anchors the composition. Throughout the home, the design prioritises a sense of flow, light, and layered texture.

The apartment came as a bare-shell space within a high-rise, and the designers retained its existing strengths. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the shared living and dining areas with natural light. They frame verdant views that become an integral part of the interior experience.

    Materials

Rather than competing with the outdoors, the designers use a restrained palette of taupe, pastels, and warm veneers. Brass and crystal accents add subtle contrast to the muted scheme. A customised crystal chandelier with a contemporary form hangs above the dining table. Its rhythm echoes the geometric mouldings that frame the walls.

Veneer marquetry in three stains creates a textural backdrop for dining, while a leaf-lined wallpaper behind the TV anchors the living room. Every element, from the diamond-tufted back sofas to the brass-legged console and coffee table, contributes to a quietly glamorous whole.

    Kitchen

The kitchen, designed for maximum functionality and ease of maintenance, finds its own stylistic moment. Light ceramic tiles and cabinetry visually offset the dark marble floor, resulting in a timeless monotone charm that prioritises everyday use. Private quarters continue the language of layered sophistication.

    Parent’s Bedroom

The parents’ bedroom, by contrast, is a cocoon of plush luxury: a dusty purple upholstered wall with brass inlay frames a raised wallpaper panel within a veneer backboard, while floral-textured wardrobe fronts and a corner vanity niche enhance the sense of intimate drama.

    Guest Room

The guestroom is enlivened by a hand-stencilled ‘Tree of Life’ mural and pocket details within the closet that create niches for objets d’art.

    Master Bedroom

The master bedroom, bathed in sunlight from a narrow balcony lined with plants, keeps interiors intentionally bright and light. A tufted headboard contrasts against straight-lined moulding on a brown accent wall, while hints of metal detailing are repeated in the master bathroom’s black-and-gold mosaic tiling and brass-framed glass partitions add visual rhythm.

    Daughter’s Room

The daughters’ room became the project’s starting point.  Her favourite colour, pink, runs as a unifying theme across the space, which is designed to be open for movement and play while maximising every inch for storage. A sketched rabbit decal adorns wardrobe shutters beside a custom bunk bed, and the adjoining bathroom echoes the playful shapes and hues.

Coordinating the aesthetic wishes of three generations, from young children to grandparents, posed a natural challenge. Yet the design resolves this through a consistent material and colour language that allows each room its own identity while remaining part of a cohesive whole.

The dark marble flooring runs throughout, grounding the varied palettes, while brass, fluted glass, and geometric mouldings recur as quiet signatures. Ultimately, The Elysian Haven in kolkata is an exploration of how minimalist discipline can amplify maximalist detail. It is a home where craft and family life coexist, where every surface and object serves both beauty and purpose, and where warmth emerges not from clutter, but from considered restraint.
