Japandi Interiors Bring Calm to This Skyscraper Home in Mumbai | Aashni Kumar

Editor’s Note: Some homes help us slow down, even when the world outside never does. High above the busy streets of Mumbai, this home creates a calm and comforting atmosphere through simple forms, natural materials, and soft textures. Instead of relying on bold design statements, it finds beauty in balance, where every space feels warm, functional, and thoughtfully put together. The mix of Japanese simplicity, French elegance, and handcrafted details gives the home a quiet character that feels personal rather than perfect. The result is a home that reminds us that true luxury is not about having more, but about feeling at ease in the space you call your own. ~ Yashika Bajaniya

Design Philosophy

Every space she designs carries a distinct personality shaped by a shared vision with the client. At the heart of her work lies craftsmanship, individuality, and an strong commitment to careful attention to detail. Perched on the 48th floor, this 1200 sq. ft. three-bedroom apartment reflects her signature cozy minimal-maximal aesthetic. It is thoughtfully balanced with the refined tastes of its inhabitants. A journey through Urbane Tranquility reveals a seamless synergy between design and functionality, artistic expression, and refined living. Together, these elements create a holistic experience that refreshes both mind and spirit.

Stepping inside, a gold-rimmed mirror with a unique abstract profile defines the foyer wall. It offers a subtle glimpse into the living room beyond. A warm earthy palette envelops the living space, creating an inviting atmosphere. Rich dark teakwood flooring, open-grain black wood, and greige textured walls come together to form a refined and cohesive interior.

Balanced Harmony

A blend of clean lines and organic shapes, muted and warm tones, natural light from the panoramic vistas and shadows from the ambient lights, the apartment reflects with urbane tranquillity. The sleek symmetry in the dining area, close to the kitchen, ensures a natural flow between the sections, balancing aesthetic appeal and functional efficiency.

Meandering across the passage, a contemporary bench stands poised, leading to the black-grained wooden doors to the master bedroom, the den cum study and the walk-in wardrobe, each naturally connected with their en-suite bathrooms.

Private Retreat

The master bedroom continues the home’s muted colour palette, creating a warm and cosy atmosphere. A rustic bench and an inviting bed enhance its sense of comfort. Inspired by subtle French influences, the walk-in wardrobe introduces a softer, more feminine character. Crinkled fabric-clad wardrobes, a gold-rimmed freestanding mirror, and a rose-pink pouffe come together to create an elegant dressing space with the charm of a fine jewellery store.

Defined by a masculine character, the den’s yang dominates with a plush sage green sofa, a swing arm light, a bark serving as a desk, and a combination of cane and wooden storage with book shelves, which serves as sophisticated ergonomic retreat for a lawyer.

Etching a compelling narrative, the canvas of dark browns, vivid blacks and greiges is creatively played with hues of grey, greens, mauve, rose pink and yellow gold. Whilst travertine marble, pink Dholpur stone, and matte Belgium black marble add a touch of quiet luxury. Blending rustic charm with contemporary comfort is jute, cane and bark thoughtfully juxtaposed with elegant gold and black metal accents. This tactile expression is further accentuated with a mix of linens, velvets, silk, and cotton, contributing to the overall warmth and charm of the space.

Designing Timeless, Immersive Spaces

“We endeavour to build timeless spaces that are unique and immersive, through a collection of memories, moods, moments and a shared vision. While this space embraces our core minimal maximal ethos, the aim is to accentuate a soothing atmosphere with refined luxury, harmoniously integrating elements of modern, minimalist, and artisanal design vocabulary,” says, Aashni Kumar.
